The Michigan Laborers Union (LIUNA Michigan) works to ensure that Michigan stays Union strong now and in the future. Organizing and marketing is an essential part of what the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) and our local unions do to ensure jobs for our members. This staff position is dedicated to working almost exclusively within Michigan and servicing our seven affiliated local unions.

The Research Director provides research to support the political, economic, and member engagement goals of LIUNA Michigan. The Director will lead research work to develop, execute, and disseminate information that enhances the jobs of our members.

This position reports to the Business Manager of the Michigan Laborers District Council and works closely with other senior staff.


  • Oversee and conduct research for campaigns across Michigan and assist with LIUNA’s core issue areas

  • Work in close partnership with the Local Unions in Michigan to develop innovative and impactful strategies and campaigns

  • Oversee and maintain documents

  • Assist in developing a culture of commitment to and participation in programs and events connected with our Union’s mission

  • Build a network of strategic allies and resources for the organizing department and union

  • Coordinate the development and execution of a vibrant and cohesive digital strategy

  • Maintain campaign digital assets, including website, social media, SMS, and other properties

  • Offer regular analysis of the effectiveness of tools, develop metrics for success and best practices

  • Monitor online channels for information useful for organizing, political action, community engagement, bargaining campaigns, and other union programs

  • Work with communications and design teams to produce multi-media materials for digital projects

  • Research and evaluate various technologies as needed to assist organizers, communicators, and other LIUNA staff and leaders on the most effective use of technology for communications and organizing purposes

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the department


  • Genuine commitment to the values and goals of the labor movement

  • Minimum 4 years experience in strategic research and campaigns preferred

  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills

  • Experience in research, financial analysis, public records and legal research (LexisNexis), campaign/opposition research, data analysis, and data management

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, work well under pressure and deadlines, and manage multiple priorities and projects effectively

  • Demonstrated ability to build sound relationships with staff at all levels and to provide strategic advice and direction

  • General understanding of the construction industry

Office located in Lansing. Work may be required in many locations across the state. Extended hours and travel may be required.
