Construction Worker Organizer

Based in Nashville, TN

 

Workers’ Dignity an 11-year old multi-racial, multi-lingual worker center based in Nashville, Tennessee seeks to hire a Construction Worker Organizer. We are a worker-led center organizing for economic and racial justice and dignity for all! Through a member-led process, we organize strategic campaigns to build worker power in Middle Tennessee. Our Commercial Construction campaign is a multi-year campaign to create a floor of wages and safe conditions for construction workers, including worker-led monitoring and enforcement. The Construction Worker Organizer will work closely with the Co-Director and the Construction Worker Committee at Workers’ Dignity to oversee the implementation of the campaign’s strategic goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with other team members, support and guide workers during a corporate campaign targeting a bad employer in Nashville.
  • Work with Co-Director and worker leaders to develop a campaign timeline with concrete and measurable goals
  • Support and mentor interns and worker committees at worksites and citywide construction worker committee to develop their organizing skills and political analysis through leadership ladders and intentional relationships
  • Provide strategic input for campaigns to identify power structures, potential targets and tactics
  • Work with local, regional and national partners to achieve common goals
  • Conduct outreach with staff and members to identify new leaders at workplaces, through current leaders, at community locations, homes, and using remote strategies (following covid safety measures)
  • Collect, input, and use data consistently
  • Support meetings and co-facilitate trainings
  • Consistent communication with campaign team and Co-Director about work
  • Create and foster strategic alliances

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend Workers’ Dignity organizational meetings and check-ins
  • Professional development (up to 5 hours a week). It can include training, conferences or classes to grow as an organizer or personally.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to Workers’ Dignity’s mission and vision
  • 5 or more years of experience in worker organizing and coalition building; having taken an active role in a worker organizing campaign from start to finish
  • Ability to work with people of different backgrounds, cultures, languages and genders.
  • Commitment to political education and anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, and anti-patriarchal values
  • Skill Requirements: Fluent in spoken and written Spanish and English; basic computer literacy; working knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws; experience in conducting grassroots outreach and one-on-ones; experience in meeting facilitation.
  • Work Environment: Reliable transportation, schedule varying according to organizational needs and often including nights and weekends, bulk of work is outside or traveling from/to various locations.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $50,000 year (plus medical, dental and vision insurance/PPO for staff & dependents with no monthly premium; professional development fund to use at organizer’s discretion with Co-Director approval)

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Fulltime, exempt, one year contract with option to renew.
