Lead Organizer – Nail Salon Campaign
Bi-Lingual English / Spanish

The NY NJ Regional Joint Board of Workers United is dedicated to winning economic and racial justice through innovative and dynamic worker-led organizing campaigns.

We are a diverse and participatory union that centers our members’ needs for justice at work and in their communities. We build their collective power to win dignity, good contracts, safe working conditions, and laws that benefit working families. We are committed to uplifting all working people in the New York -New Jersey region.

Our current focus is building worker leadership among the mostly immigrant women employed in New York’s nail salon industry. This growing campaign is centered around building the power of working class immigrant women of color. We are building the first-ever nail salon worker union in the United States, changing the landscape of what’s possible to win power.

We are seeking an experienced bilingual (Spanish/English) organizer to join our team to help build on our record of success in winning higher standards for nail salon workers. Reporting to the Campaign Coordinator, the Lead Organizer is part of a cross-departmental team. They will participate in senior staff meetings and planning sessions as well as train and lead organizers. The Lead Organizer will perform a range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the Nail Salon Campaign and the Union’s broader organizing program.

Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

  • Develop and drive the membership recruitment, development and retention programs
  • Train and mentor member leaders, including leading and coordinating member committees
  • Help develop and run organizing meetings and worker trainings
  • Lead, develop and train organizers on organizing fundamentals, while setting high standards in work ethic and conduct
  • Coordinate, organize and lead actions, events and workshops to move the campaign forward
  • Work with staff across departments to develop and drive campaigns to ensure proper implementation, evaluation and outcomes.
  • Assure the accuracy and organization of lists, records, databases and wall charts
  • Establish good working relationships with community partners and allies
  • Work cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness and success
  • Effectively articulate campaign vision and strategy

Required Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish and English (including reading, writing and speaking)
  • An in-depth understanding of worker organizing based on prior work experience
  • Three or more years of organizing experience, union organizing including experience leading and/or managing a team strongly preferred
  • Determination, tenacity and willingness to do what is needed to advance the mission and values of the campaign
  • Excellent time management, project management and delegation skills
  • Knowledge of computer operations (including but not limited to, Google Apps, Microsoft Office, etc.); experience with database systems a plus
  • Strong communicator with excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel, and to work irregular hours (often evenings and weekends)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity and professionalism
  • Experience and ability to work with communities of color and people from diverse backgrounds, including union staff at all levels
  • Passion and dedication to fight for progressive values and a commitment to social, economic and racial justice

The NY NJ Regional Joint Board offers a competitive salary and a full benefits package, including employer-paid health coverage for full-time employees and their eligible dependents.

Starting Salary: $60,000
