Labor Liaison
HVALF, AFL-CIO / United Way of Jackson County, MI

(Temporarily REMOTE)


The Labor Liaison helps promote and advance the shared agenda of the United Way of Jackson County and the Huron Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF), AFL-CIO. We believe that, together, we can increase the number of local households earning a living wage and reduce financial instability throughout Jackson County, Michigan. The Liaison will regularly convene a board-level committee (The Labor Committee) and assist with raising resources (financial contributions and volunteers) to support various programs and activities serving working families, and coordinate special projects as assigned.

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:

  • Provide referrals, information and assistance to workers and their families
  • Increase labor union affiliation with, and participation in, the HVALF
  • Network with community groups to advance working families’ interests in Jackson County, such as increasing the share of the workforce earning enough to meet a Basic Needs budget
  • Build union and volunteer capacity for the community and HVALF
  • Improve support systems, public and private, for workers and their families so they are better served
  • Improve the social and economic conditions of working families to reduce their need for services and assistance
  • Increase labor support for the United Way campaign
  • Cultivate HVALF/United Way partnerships
  • HVALF and United Way will develop an annual joint work plan with measurable goals, and review progress regularly
  • Maintain good lines of communication between the United Way of Jackson County and the HVALF, through regular attendance at the HVALF’s monthly meetings, and by other means that contribute to this purpose.
  • Attend appropriate Labor and United Way meetings and conferences
  • Other duties in accordance with the MI AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison Core Program agreement
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Minimum requirements include:
  • Very good organizational and communications skills
  • Ability to be flexible in a constantly changing work environment


  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
  • A working knowledge of organized labor, with an understanding of the local labor movement and its Community Service programs
  • Community and/or labor organizing skills and experience are highly desirable
  • An interest in promoting volunteerism and human service
  • Good problem solver, consensus builder, and decision maker
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance
  • Physical requirements may include bending, lifting up to 25 pounds and standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Weekends required. Some travel and after-hours may also be required.
