Strategic Researcher

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 is seeking a Strategic Researcher who is excited about working in a progressive union environment.

Position requires a creative and collaborative thinker who can draw on diverse information sources, including our own members' knowledge, in order to develop strategic insights that will advance the union's policy, bargaining and organizing goals. All relevant experience will be considered.


  • Works closely with the relevant directors to conceive and carry out quantitative and qualitative research projects that contribute directly to:
    • Developing and winning union organizing campaigns, as well as community organizing, political and policy campaigns
    • Defending and raising standards through collective bargaining
    • Building membership involvement and capacity
  • Prepares written communications for staff, members, allies, journalists and government officials
  • Delivers formal and informal presentations to internal and external audiences
  • Helps drive campaigns, in collaboration with staff from relevant departments and external allies


  1. Commitment to economic, political and social justice, including racial and gender equity
  2. 3 years’ experience working on policy and/or union organizing campaigns
  3. Excellent oral and written communications skills
  4. Ability to find and analyze relevant quantitative and qualitative information, including financial reports, traditional and social media, worker stories, legal documents, and government and commercial databases
  5. Experience costing complex collective bargaining agreements using spreadsheet and database software, or the ability to acquire the relevant skills
  6. Ability to build teams and work successfully with diverse groups of people
  7. Ability to work long and irregular hours, when necessary, and manage multiple priorities under pressure and deadlines
  8. Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License
  9. Second language skills preferable

Salary / Benefits: Competitive pay and benefits, exciting work. Salary and benefits are set by collective bargaining agreement.
