The Texas Climate Jobs and Renewable Energy Project seeks a dynamic and passionate Project Director who will seize this opportunity to build out and develop a groundbreaking, labor led climate initiative based on the needs and experiences of Texas workers and Texas communities.

Overview of the Organization
Fair Shot Texas and the Fair Shot Texas Action Fund are 501 c (3) and 501 c (4) partner organizations founded by the Texas AFL-CIO to advance a working families policy agenda in Texas.

The Texas Climate Jobs and Renewable Energy Project is the foundational project under this umbrella. The Project’s mission is to develop and advance pro-worker, pro-union, and pro-Texas solutions to the climate crisis. It is rooted in the belief that the climate crisis presents an opportunity to build thriving local economies that are not only more sustainable, but also more just and equitable.

The Texas Climate Jobs and Renewable Energy Project will engage in collective action to both protect the climate and create good jobs through organizing, advocacy, local partnerships, affiliations and funder relationships while offering educational and outreach resources to the labor movement and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Campaigns, Advocacy, Outreach and Education: Develop strategic advocacy/action campaigns to advance the goals of the organization; building and maintaining relationships with allies, partners, and community groups; representing the organization in governmental and public forums.
  • Organizational Leadership: Coordinate strategic planning, prepare for regular Board meetings and coordinate Board development and recruitment.
  • Fundraising: Identify funding opportunities, prepare and submit fundraising proposals, and build relationships with institutional and grassroots donors.
  • Administration and Operations: Oversee administrative and operations functions, including payroll, tax obligations, financial records, ethics compliance and more.
  • Staff Supervision and Professional Development

Primary Characteristics and Experience

The Texas Climate Jobs and Renewable Energy Project Director should be an experienced, passionate advocate for a progressive economic agenda, a deep believer in the power of unions to lead on economic and climate issues, and committed to meet the existential threat of both global climate change and economic inequality with bold, transformative solutions.

In addition, the Director should have:

  • Substantial experience in labor, grassroots and/or community organizing, campaigns, or related experience;
  • Proven ability to think strategically and analyze power dynamics, and to incorporate those factors into plans for action;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, with non-profit management a significant plus;
  • Strong experience with legislative and policy advocacy at all levels of government, preferably in Texas;
  • A working knowledge and demonstrated commitment to the labor movement, with knowledge of the Texas landscape for social and political movements a plus;
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and listening, writing, outgoing presentation, and the passion and presence to be a dynamic leader;
  • Successful track record in fundraising/development and experience engaging donors of all levels;
  • An understanding of sound nonprofit business and financial practices; demonstrated financial and budgeting skills;
  • Ability to cultivate board engagement, recruitment and development, gained as a staff person or board member.

Salary: Minimum $75,000 with potential adjustments upward depending on experience.
