Legislative and Political Program Coordinator

The mission of the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is to represent professional registered nurses, as well as all members. Through the MNA, members shall act to educate, advocate, organize, and collectively bargain to promote professional practice, quality patient outcomes, and healthy communities.

The Legislative and Political Program Coordinator is responsible for contributing to MNA’s ongoing legislative goals and for helping to build political power. This is a full-time position reporting to the Associate Executive Director of Nursing & Govt Affairs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy or related field
  • +/- 2 years of experience in a legislative support, advocacy or political mobilization role
  • Desired experience with marketing, fundraising, political action committees (PACs), project administration and/or collective bargaining
  • Ability to connect MNA legislative and political priorities with new member organizing and contract negotiations wherever possible.
  • Ability to have constructive one-on-one educational and organizing conversations with MNA members and potential members.
  • Ability to mobilize turnout for MNA PAC, political advocacy and education events.
  • Ability to create and maintain legislative and political contacts in coordination with the Government Affairs Director
  • Ability to conduct outreach to legislators/candidates and staff regarding MNA events, endorsement screenings, MNA positions, MNA PAC and coalition participation
  • Experience with monitoring legislation and regulations at local, state and national levels
  • Desired experience with driving volunteer turnout for events such as campaign/candidate walks and phone banks.

Role Expectations of Legislative and Political Program Coordinator

  • Administration and growth of the MNA-PAC fund with meticulous record keeping and attention to detail including proper collection of PAC contributions, accurate recording, and timely and accurate MNA-PAC Campaign Finance Reports are created and reviewed prior to filing.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for mobilization and increase of donations to the MNA-PAC
  • Ability to create varying reports, evaluations and communication materials in a timely fashion
  • Responsibility for contributing to MNA’s legislative goals and for helping to build political power for the organization.
  • Ability to deliver projects from concepts to fruition
  • Ability to receive feedback and undergo continuous quality improvement
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be self-directed and also function within a dynamic, collaborative team
  • Independent and collaborative outreach to members: periodic travel within the state may be required.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Outstanding customer service skills including timely follow up via synchronous and asynchronous members
  • Ability to contribute to growth of role and organization
