Organizing Director

SEIU Local 521 was founded in 2007 when 5 local unions came together in the Bay Area, Central Coast and Central Valley to form one larger, more powerful union. Together our members are building a true 21st century union fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members. We represent over 50,000 public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, and public health care.

Organizing Director will supervise union staff members of SEIU Local 521. You will be organizing new bargaining units into SEIU Local 521. Our organizing plan is focused on the public sector, privatized public services, and public healthcare. The ideal candidate will understand industry analysis, have experience managing a large team over a large jurisdiction, and experience applying strategic leverage, research, policy, and ground level organizing to create the conditions for victory. The Director will serve on the staff leadership team of the regional local and work as a team to oversee the implementation of the union’s vision and program.

RESPONSIBILITIES: All duties listed are required but not limited to and may or may not be continuously performed or ongoing at any specific time.

  • Providing strategic vision & plan for the overall Organizing Department and for multiple campaigns.
  • Leading and providing support to teams of staff and members in the execution of overall campaign plan as well as individual work plans.
  • Assisting in the training and development of staff and member organizers.
  • Leading staff by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach to the work.
  • Making short- and long-term campaign plans, and carrying out multi-component plans.
  • Creating and articulating a positive vision for campaigns and of the union as a whole.
  • Building one-one-one relationships with workers, educating them about the union.
  • Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
  • Work with staff to identify, recruit, and develop leaders to guide and lead their campaign.
  • Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take action.
  • Work to create real and positive ways to involve community allies in current organizing campaigns.
  • Engaging workers in broader union efforts to change industry standards as a whole.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior management of union staff experience
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and/or for extended period of time within the local’s jurisdiction, based on work assignments.
  • Motivated self- starter who is also a solid team player
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong personal planning and time management skills
  • The ability to work with people from other cultures and backgrounds.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.
