Worker Center Organizer

Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ) is a worker center fighting for good, living wage jobs among the thousands of transportation and logistics workers in the Chicago area, the largest intermodal logistics hub on the planet. Our work blends union and worker' center models, focusing on long-term leadership development, alliances with community organizations, and development of innovative organizing tactics.

This position is focused on worker outreach and providing free legal resources to warehouse workers in Will County. This includes but is not limited to, sealing and expungement services, resources for legal violations like wage theft and supporting workers who are fighting harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Organizer will work with a growing team of staff dedicated to improving the lives of one of the largest workforces in the state. This is a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute field plan
  • Promote WWJ’s Ongoing Know Your Rights and Emergency Response Efforts
  • Distribute Know Your Rights and PPE Materials
  • Assist Organizing Team in Growing WWJ’s leadership committees
  • Conduct worker outreach efforts
  • Lead one-on-one and group meetings with workers
  • Identify and develop workplace leaders
  • Assist Organizing Team in building worker’s committees
  • Maintain accurate information on worksites and campaign activities
  • Gather information necessary for enforcement of labor laws

Requirements:

  • Previous organizing experience a plus
  • Ability to make and execute a workplan
  • Ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends
  • A working vehicle and a valid drivers' license
  • Basic computer and writing skills
  • A strong commitment to social justice
  • Spanish speaking is a plus

Will be supervised by WWJ’s Lead Organizer. Salary is $45k – $52k depending on experience. Benefits and car allowance are provided.
