Doctors Council SEIU is the nation’s oldest and largest union for physicians and dentists. Doctors Council is affiliated with SEIU. We represent doctors who work in public and private facilities. Doctors Council SEIU’s long and rich history of advocating for union doctors was added to with organizing victories in different states that led to many new first contracts. With the successful conclusion of these contracts, we are now a union that is approximately half public sector and half private sector. Our increased membership gives us greater strength to work together for our goals.

POSITION AVAILABLE: National Organizing Director

Do you have the experience, skills and determination to give doctors and patients a strong voice through Doctors Council by having us grow?

You will be responsible for running an organizing program to educate, empower and enable doctors to join Doctors Council. This can include organizing through a first contract as well as membership that is not dependent on collective bargaining. The National Organizing Director will expand Doctors Council across the country and oversee organizers as well as improving our organizing abilities.

The qualified individual will be responsible for building membership, planning and implementing the external organizing program, preparing organizational and informational literature, leading recruitment drives and elections, and other issues related to organizing. You will be responsible for implementing organization objectives, plans, policies and procedures nationally. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Work with leadership to develop and implement the strategic growth plan.
  • Coordinate, design and manage logistics for recruitment and representation campaigns, including vision, strategy, timeline, communications, outreach and politics.
  • Plan, organize, direct, control, provide guidance and coordinate organization drives to form or expand units, including supervising and evaluating, leading, assigning, motivating and training members and staff.
  • Recruit, interview and recommend hiring staff.
  • Conduct research to identify and access potential organizing.
  • Work with SEIU and other unions, as well as community, medical and political allies.
  • Establish contact with potential members, organize and run meetings, identify and develop rank and file leadership.

Applicants for this position must possess a bachelor's/college degree or higher degree and have at least ten (10) years experience in building and running a successful organizing department with increasing responsibility as well as winning large campaigns.

You must also have:

  • Experience running large organizing campaigns, preferably in healthcare, or with professional employees.
  • Knowledge of healthcare changes and reforms, issues facing doctors and patients as well as hospitals and health systems.
  • Experience in winning against well-run consultant campaigns.
  • Demonstrated success at providing direction and leadership to other organizers.
  • Experience in supervising staff and member mobilizations, and ability to relate, establish and cultivate meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A knowledge of union organizing practices and principles and thorough knowledge of labor laws, in both private and public sectors.
  • The ability to write organizing plans and grant proposals.
  • Budgetary and fiscal experience.
  • Sensitivity to political nuances within a labor organization.
  • Extensive experience working with coalitions.
  • A track record of discerning priorities and meeting competing deadlines.
  • Ability to plan and control organizing program objectives.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use technology as a tool to advance organizing goals, and also with programs, databases, email, internet, social media and organizing methodology.
  • A strong working knowledge of database programs and the ability to develop an organizing database.
  • Must be able to drive and maintain a valid driver's license, auto insurance and reliable car, as well as possess personal credit cards. Be able to drive long distances, and travel throughout the country to different states and cities. Travel and work away from home.

You must be a self-starter with the ability to work with supervision. This position requires long and varied hours, including nights and weekends, with travel. This position is based out of our national office in New York and reports to the Executive Director.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary depends on experience. Excellent full benefit package includes 100% employer paid self and dependent medical and dental, as well as 100% employer paid defined benefit pension plan.
