Fossil Free California

Fossil Free California

Union Organizer

This position may be worked remotely but should
ideally be based in Southern California (Los Angeles area preferred)

Who We Are: Fossil Free California (fossilfreeca.org) works to end financial support for climate-damaging fossil fuels, and promotes the transition to a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.

Fossil Free California addresses the causes of climate change by focusing on public and private financing of fossil fuel companies and related enterprises. We promote fossil fuel divestment by institutions and individuals, with emphasis on CalPERS and CalSTRS, the nation’s two largest public pension funds. We work statewide with allied environmental and climate action groups and the state legislature to work toward a just transition to a low-carbon economy for California.

Position Summary
Six-Month Contract, 10 hours per week to start. Hourly rate and schedule review at 1 and 3 months. Position open immediately.

This position will work at the intersection of climate and labor justice. While the value of fossil fuel investments has declined precipitously in the last ten years, the CalPERS and CalSTRS pension funds have failed to move to reallocate these holdings to climate-safe investments. Had they done so, these funds would be billions of dollars richer. The Union Organizer will organize locals affiliated with California state and/or local government workers to pass resolutions urging the relevant pension fund to divest from fossil fuels and to take appropriate follow-up actions.

Work can be performed remotely, but applicant should ideally be based in Southern California, Los Angeles area preferred.
