Lead Organizer

Based in Hennepin County, MN
(Twin Cities Metro Area)

 

AFSCME Local 2822 is an organizing-focused, member-driven, progressive labor union representing 1300 clerical workers throughout Hennepin County, MN.

Purpose: This position works directly with local leadership and members to strengthen rank and file involvement in Hennepin County. Successful candidates will be comfortable on the go, frequently meeting and talking with workers individually via office visits, and phone calls. The organizer is also responsible for organizing workplace committees, identifying workplace leaders, and planning and carrying out worksite organizing and comprehensive campaigns in support and coordination with local leadership. Organizer will be expected to target issues identify and recruit workplace leaders to our Member Action Team, and move workers to use collective action to solve workplace issues. Every day is different and tasks can vary widely from one week to the next, but the majority of time will be spent directly organizing workers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma and 3 years’ experience in union organizing or rank and file union activism; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of union organizing practices and principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with people and meet people where they are at.
  • Exceptional organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for worker organizing and a deep commitment to social justice.
  • Basic clerical skills and competency in standard programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Google applications (Gmail, G Calendar, etc.)
  • Access to a reliable Vehicle as frequent travel will be required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience managing social media channels, mass communication, and email communications
  • Experience in graphic design and/or creating promotional leaflets/adverts
  • Experience with complex project management and mobilizing large groups of people.
  • Experience with Hennepin County or other local government institutions
  • Knowledge of basic labor law such as FMLA, ADA, OSHA, Workers Compensation, and Fair Housing and Employment

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizing and Events

  • 80% of time will be spent in the workplace organizing new employees to join our union and organizing members to become active in our union.
  • Coordinate with President and Chief Stewards to follow up on and summarize organizing campaigns
  • Recruit and develop worksite leaders to become involved in the MAT, stewards, and other union activities
  • Support local leadership to build capacity for campaigns
  • Develop broad, representative organizing committees of worksite leaders, and train them to develop worksite organizing campaigns.
  • Work with leadership and membership on planning and implementing successful actions and campaigns.
  • Assist NEO coordinator with following up with new members
  • Help organize and set up social events
  • Attend all informational meetings and member organized events and functions.
  • Attend Hennepin County Board meetings and report items of import
  • Work with stewards, activists, and officers to set up regular site visits

Communications

  • Promptly return phone calls and emails, especially to members
  • Create leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns and other events.
  • Support web administrator and newsletter editor, maintain and update email lists, social media accounts, and other communication tools.
  • Ensure that events are well documented (photos, video, etc.)
  • Support existing communication structures and help develop new ones to educate and organize members.

Administrative

  • Support, develop, and maintain membership database and workplace maps, which may include input on and operation of computerized database systems.
  • Inform President and Executive Board of activities, developments, and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings.
  • Ensure materials are distributed to members.
  • Attend membership and Executive Board meetings to keep current on decisions of the local.

Salary: $19-25/hour, depending on experience, plus generous reimbursement for health and dental, vacation, and sick leave.
