Media & Public Affairs Director

MPA is currently accepting inquiries to hire a Media & Public Affairs Director, a full-time salaried position in MPA’s communications department. The Media & Public Affairs Director will:

  • Develop and manage MPA’s earned media program;
  • Coordinate press events with allies and MPA staff (writing press releases and advisories, working with speakers to draft remarks, developing topline messages, etc.
  • Work with MPA members and allies on opinion editorial drafting and placement
  • Cultivate robust reporter relationships
  • Maintain the organization’s press list
  • Develop training programs for MPA members and other impacted people on how to powerfully share their personal stories with the press
  • Train a broad set of MPA staff in serving as spokespeople for the organization
  • Represent MPA in coalition efforts where allies are working to develop shared media and messaging strategies;
  • Serve on a dynamic communications team that includes a Digital Director and a news reporting team at MaineBeacon.com, and work to ensure media programs are part of a larger strategy for advancing MPA issues on social media and other digital platforms; and
  • Provide leadership to the development of organizational messages; working with other MPA communications staff, and drawing on expertise of state and national allies, the Media & Public Affairs Director will ensure there are message strategy documents and talking point memos for all major MPA campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to progressive values, especially racial justice;
  • Excellent judgment in a fast-moving, complex, political campaigns context;
  • Team-oriented with superb relational and communications skills;
  • Proficient in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications;
  • An ability to meet deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and Facebook/Twitter;
  • A willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends; and
  • Some experience in the realms of policy, communications, or field organizing for advocacy organizations or political campaigns preferred.

The position is unionized and full-time, with extensive benefits and a salary in the range of $37,000 – $55,000, depending on experience. Open until filled.
