Development Director
Michigan AFL-CIO Labor Foundation

Introduction:
The Michigan AFL-CIO is a non-profit federation of labor unions that represents over 1 million working people across Michigan and is seeking to hire a Development Director for the Michigan AFL-CIO Labor Foundation. This position will report to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Michigan AFL-CIO Labor Foundation and the CEO of the Michigan AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute.

The Development Director is responsible for identifying programmatic and capital opportunities and working with internal staff and external partners to design, develop and write funding proposals for grants and donations from foundations, organizations, corporations, individuals and government entities. The Development Director is responsible for the research, identification, project development, writing, tracking, and stewardship of funding proposals in support of Michigan AFL-CIO and affiliated organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize projects that qualify for philanthropic funding and develop into compelling, professionally packaged proposals.
  • Responsible for the drafting, review, assembly and submission of proposals and stewardship reports.
  • Utilize a wide variety of print and electronic reference sources to identify upcoming funding opportunities and research funder history, interests, grant ranges and application process.
  • Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundations, state, federal, individual and corporate sources. Including developing drafts, assembly and submission of grant requests, letters, proposals, budgets, and supplemental materials.
  • Persuasively communicating the organization's mission and programs to potential funders.
  • In cooperation with the CEO, host tours of the facilities to build individual and foundation interest in programming.
  • Responsible for preparing individual donor solicitation packets.
  • Plans and secures sponsorships and ticket sales, including identifying new prospects.
  • Conducts donor follow up regarding benefits, reservations, acknowledgements and recognition.
  • Manages vendors; executes logistics and designs custom materials as needed.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet or exceed annual fundraising goals
  • Maintaining an advanced knowledge and understanding of development techniques and fundraising best practices to interact with donors and their advisors on charitable gifts
  • Develop, maintain and analyze metrics of annual fundraising goals
  • Ensure development expenses are in line with budget
  • Oversee the planning and coordination of special events, including fundraising events and awareness events
  • Ensure donor retention through a stewardship plan that includes appropriate gift acknowledgement and recognition
  • Recruit, train and support key volunteers for special event planning and other development and communication activities

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Education: Minimum Bachelor's degree with emphasis on writing; preferably in journalism, communications, marketing, public administration, political science, or related field
  • Experience: Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors required. Previous experience with fundraising with individuals preferred
  • Understanding and experience working with the labor movement, and campaign experience is preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Must be self-directed and demonstrate ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrate ability to manage time and tasks efficiently and demonstrate a compelling client/customer orientation
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
