Digital Engagement Specialist

The Michigan AFL-CIO is a non-profit federation of labor unions that represents over 1 million working people across Michigan and is seeking to hire a Digital Director. This position will report to the Chief of Staff of the Michigan AFL-CIO and the CEO of the Michigan AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute.

The Digital Engagement Specialist position will be responsible for working closely with the state labor federation’s staff to administer functional and technical support of the learning management system, as well as conceptualize, plan, and execute experiential events whether virtual, physical, or hybrid for a statewide audience.

This individual handles overall learning management system administration, content management, assignment protocol, management and reporting tools in the system. They serve as the focal point for students, facilitators and management and ensure compliance with process, technology, and data requirements according to system governance.

The individual will also manage virtual events by defining event goals, and identify the relevant event technology needs to achieve those goals, while overseeing a variety of partners to ensure all stakeholders are working together to deliver a high-quality experience for event participants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as center of administration for all learning management system (LMS) functionality in support of learning cohorts and affiliate units
  • Oversees learning content management, distribution, and reporting in the system, including creating testing and training materials for new/updated LMS releases and facilitating training
  • Provides technical support, including troubleshooting issues, performing root cause analysis, responding to client inquiries, coordinating system maintenance and ensuring data integrity
  • Ensures compliance with process, technology and data requirements according to LMS governance
  • Maintains awareness of LMS issues, enhancements, best practices and general development with LMS, including support of periodic updates and system/process enhancements
  • Works with others on the training team to develop, update, and execute requirements for course assigning, monitoring, and tracking completion of assigned content
  • Verifies records, forms, database input/out and other items are accurate and in proper order
  • Identifies, scales, produces and executes event technology solutions used across multiple events – from small events to large meetings, fundraisers, and statewide credentialed conventions
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new technologies and technology vendors to support evolving event needs
  • Create new, and improve existing, virtual, physical, and hybrid events designed to engage and inspire participants
  • Work cross-functionally to conceptualize, plan, and flawlessly execute events that are repeatable and scalable
  • Align event activities with organization priorities across affiliated groups
  • Apply analytics to better understand attendees, their behaviors and interests, and improve engagement while driving the continual optimization of future events, strategies, and plans

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, communications, business, or a closely related field
  • Experience with business and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas)
  • Experience with event technology solutions (e.g., Accelevents, Inxpo)
  • Experience organizing digital meetings, events, conventions
  • Proficiency with HTML, WordPress, Adobe Suite
  • Understanding and experience working with the labor movement, and campaign experience is strongly preferred.

Other Skills:

  • Experience in technology management including user administration, system integrations, data requirements, system configurations, system testing, and issue resolution
  • Experience in software release management
  • Experience communicating with multiple levels within an organization and in collaboration with cross-functional teams to create effective learning management solutions
  • Learning/Training department experience in a larger organization

Other Requirements:

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft business applications and Google Suite
  • Report development and database integration skills
  • Ability to investigate, analyze and solve complex problems/issues
  • Ability to manage multiple detailed projects and drive towards deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High degree of technical expertise, ability to collaborate, and a strong client service orientation
  • Project management skills and basic understanding of adult learning principles
