Lead Organizer

The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU/UFCW) represents close to 100,000 members who work in food and non-food retail, food processing, manufacturing, and distribution, healthcare and other service sectors throughout the Northeast, South and Midwest regions of the country.

The RWDSU seeks an experienced Organizer to join our team and help us build power through strong union contracts that raise wages and improve working conditions for workers.

The ideal candidate will have experience leading union organizing campaigns utilizing innovative and traditional union organizing tactics and will have demonstrated commitment to social justice movements, including experience working with community coalitions to bring about social change.


  • Minimum 3 years of union and/or community organizing experience leading teams
  • Experience with NLRB union election process, card-check labor neutrality agreements, and corporate campaigns and/or coalition building
  • Experience with digital organizing and use of media to support organizing campaigns
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours and evenings or weekends as needed
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Ability to work well both as a team member and independently
  • Strong communication skills
  • Comfortable with computers and learning new technologies
  • Fluency in English and Spanish a plus

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify and evaluate potential organizing targets
  • Work with staff across departments and regions to help develop and drive campaigns
  • Lead efforts to recruit, develop and maintain worker organizing committees
  • Help develop and run organizing meetings and trainings
  • Monitor and mentor organizers and member leaders on organizing fundamentals, including house visits, identifying new member leaders, committee development, planning and running actions, etc.
  • Build effective external relationships within the community
  • Maintain accurate lists, records, databases for each campaign
  • Other duties as assigned
