Four Temporary Organizing Specialists
Organizing And Field Support

Based in Northern Virginia

Position and Area Description:
VEA is seeking to hire four Organizing Specialists to work in Northern Virginia.  The primary focus will be the Fairfax Education Association, but will also support the efforts of VEA Local Associations in Northern Virginia in the areas of facilitating strategic planning, targeting and training, and recruitment and retention of members.

These positions are funded for a term of one year only, with no guarantee of continuing employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or three to five years of related work experience.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills.
  • Cultural competency, demonstrated commitment to racial equity and those farthest from racial and economic justice. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, database management and data analysis.
  • Experience assisting with or organizing workers in collective bargaining and understanding of the importance of collective bargaining in working persons lives. 
  • Experience in utilizing digitals tools to support organizing campaigns
  • Demonstrated membership organizing skills and sustaining internal membership
  • Successful work experience in public schools or associations advocating for public schools preferred. 
  • Highly developed and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and facilitate interdependent teams.
  • Demonstrated positive collaborative working relationships. 
  • Experience in developing and delivering training to adult
  • Reflective with a grow mindset.
  • Self-starter able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Core Job Functions:

  • Assist member leaders in targeted locals with the creation and implementation of membership recruitment plans and ensuring accountability for those plans.
  • Promote, support, and facilitate VEA’s Organizing to Bargain campaign.
  • Promote member activism around identified local association goals.
  • Provide support and advice in conjunction with member leaders and UniServ Directors.
  • Provide training in one-on-one relational engagement. 
  • Knowledge of membership campaigns, task design, building and reinforcing member lead structures, issue campaigns, and action. 
  • Experience with issue campaigns.
  • Develop a culture for using data and systems for recording data, and analyzing and acting on data acquired from these engagements.
  • Assist members in recruitment and retention of new members and potential leaders.
  • Provide training support in targeted locals to sustain membership recruitment, engagement and activism around relational and issue organizing campaigns.
  • Identify and develop potential new activists.
  • Assist member leaders with the creation of enhanced local infrastructure.

Salary and Benefits

The hiring range is from $68,000 to the low $70s, depending upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications.  The positions are covered by the VEA-VPSA Master Contract, which includes an excellent fringe benefits package.
