SEIU Local 500

Temporary Member Strength Organizer (MSO)
Higher Education Orientation

Based in Rockville, MD
(covering Metropolitan DC area and some parts of Maryland – including Baltimore)

SEIU, Local 500 is a progressive labor union, organizing and representing over 16,000 workers in the public service in Maryland and Washington, DC. We are a proud affiliate of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), fastest growing union in North America. We have an immediate opening for a Temporary Member Strength Organizer – Higher Education Orientation.

This is an internal organizing position, not a traditional representational role. This position requires good organizing and communication skills to convey complex contractual and political information in understandable language, an ability to write well, and a willingness to work long, often irregular hours—including weekends and evenings. Applicants need to be self-starters and have the ability to develop remote outreach plans using zoom meetings, texting tools, email outreach and phone calls. The applicant must be able to work with minimal supervision. Strategic thinking and great interpersonal skills are a must. A successful applicant has the ability to keep excellent records, is comfortable using databases and has the ability to analyze data to develop a clear picture of the union’s higher education members. This position will work specifically with the Local’s Higher Education members. Successful Member Strength organizers are flexible, able to think on their feet and have a healthy sense of humor.

Two to three years’ experience with another labor union or nonprofit organization as an organizer, or at least one year experience with SEIU, is preferred. We offer an excellent starting salary and fringe benefit package. An applicant for this position must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent computer knowledge, and a commitment to social justice and the labor movement. The ability to speak Spanish is strongly preferred.
