MFT seeks to hire a full-time Staff Director to coordinate programs and operations during a time of significant activity and growth. The MFT Staff Director will oversee and direct the work of 5-10 staff members (and coordinate with two chapter presidents) whose duties cover member organizing, community organizing, electoral politics, member representation, office and building management, and other special projects. They would also be responsible for implementation of grant funded projects to support this work. In addition, MFT has relationships with affiliates, allied organizations, school district officials and others that the Staff Director would assist in building and maintaining.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing systems of oversight and accountability for staff and all programmatic work;
  • Managing all financial and HR operations of the union;
  • Managing staff and member leader development;
  • Overseeing all grant-writing and fundraising;
  • Managing staff relationships with state and national affiliates;
  • Coordinating all activity with elected MFT officers;
  • Ensuring fidelity to a member-led strategic plan;
  • Required to work irregular/extended work hours as necessary and function with a high degree of independence;
  • Must have driver’s license and vehicle to conduct responsibilities; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Personnel Committee

  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in union organizing, preferably in the education sector;
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience preferred;
  • Experience developing and implementing systems for staff oversight, development, coaching and accountability;
  • Experience preparing for and playing a leading role in a strike;
  • Experience organizing for racial and economic justice in communities of color;
  • A commitment to union democracy and member-led unionism; and
  • An understanding of the broader social and economic forces that have resulted in the deeply unequal status quo in public education.

This is a full time, exempt salaried position with benefits.
