Full-time Organizer/Business Agent

Based in Minneapolis, MN

 

Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Local 59 (MFT) is a union of teachers, other licensed staff and Education Support Professionals (ESP) working in Minneapolis Public Schools. MFT is affiliated with Education Minnesota, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Education Association and represents 5000+ staff members in over 70 schools and educational programs in Minneapolis.

Business Agents are the main staff servicing member contract issues and representational needs such as grievances, investigations, and due process hearings. This position – conceived of as more of an Organizer than a Business Agent - is intended to help MFT bridge the gap between the traditional model of servicing members and the future work of MFT staff, which will focus primarily on building significant leadership, capacity and power at every worksite across the district. This position is assigned to the Teacher Chapter and will report to the Teacher Chapter President, but will work closely with members of both the Teacher Chapter and the ESP Chapter as well as other MFT Organizers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Have a deep understanding and knowledge of the Teacher Chapter Contract and assist members with contract issues and violations;
  • Represent members with grievances, investigations, and/or due process hearings;
  • Identify, recruit, train, develop and support stewards and work-site leaders;
  • Work to ensure leadership is representative of all member races, ages, gender, and other identities;
  • Provide representation support to members and work with member leaders to assist members through investigations and improvement plans;
  • Provide worksite organizing support to schools such as helping leaders build worksite committees, map their worksites and develop issue-specific organizing campaigns.
  • Maintain visibility with the membership through building visits;
  • Establish and maintain a positive and empowering working relationship with the membership;
  • Provide advice and appropriate professional assistance to members;
  • Support the MFT bargaining team(s) with campaign planning and strategizing;
  • Recruit non-members to be members;
  • Work with external partners and coalitions as assigned;
  • Strategize and provide insight and guidance to local MFT leadership regarding local growth and direction;
  • Required to work irregular/extended work hours as necessary and function with a high degree of independence;
  • Must have driver’s license and vehicle to conduct responsibilities; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience fighting for racial and social justice;
  • Experience working with a wide variety of populations, personalities and viewpoints;
  • Experience leading, motivating and collaborating with union members and leaders;
  • Experience collaborating with community partners;
  • Experience with effective practices in representation including resolution skills;
  • Experience in contract enforcement and handling grievances;
  • Experience in collective bargaining campaigns and negotiations;
  • Experience in organizing non-members into membership;
  • Experience in worksite organizing;
  • Effective and efficient utilization of time management, work plans, and implementation of plans to meet objectives and goals;
  • Creative problem solving and decision-making skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
