The New York State Nurses Association is a labor organization of over 40,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. We are New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

This position will report to and function under the Program Director. Collaboration with other SPAN and NYSNA staff expected. This position is part of NYSNA’s overall effort to market and promote NYSNA’s Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses (SPAN) program mission.

* Flexible schedule, with some evening and weekend work. Significant travel required.*


  • Heighten awareness of the SPAN program and substance use issues for nurses;
  • Develop and present SPAN educational outreach programming for various audiences;
  • Establish and maintain resource networks for exchange of program information with PAP, treatment providers, EAP’s, attorneys, regulatory agency staff, nursing school faculty, and other relevant entities;
  •  Maintain a working knowledge of all association programs, and their interrelationships, and collaborate as needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of SPAN policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with regional and central office staff on pertinent issues.
  • Partner with RCs to plan and coordinate public relations and marketing activities related to SPAN and other peer assistance efforts.
  • Review websites related to addiction and interrelated areas on a regular basis.


  • Respond to inquiries about SPAN and requests for outreach within 48 hours;
  • Attend SPAN staff meetings and regional advocate meetings as assigned;
  • Assist with advocate trainings;
  • Produce annual “SPAN”ing New York State newsletter;
  • Write articles about SPAN for various publications;
  • Participate in the development of written materials, Power Point presentations, and other communications to promote program activities.
  • Organize and staff SPAN exhibit booths at local, statewide and national conferences;
  • Collaborate with other NYSNA program staff to develop policies and services that foster education, prevention, early detection, and treatment of substance use disorders and related mental health disorders for facilities, agencies, and schools of nursing.
  • Represent SPAN on PAP’s Committee for Professional Assistance.
  • Collaborate with NYSNA’s Education Department to maintain and update educational plans for continuing education programs, per ANCC and IACET guidelines and requirements.
  • Assist the regional coordinators to offer liaison, outreach, education, training, and presentations.
  • Assist the regional coordinators with group facilitation as needed.
  • Provide written and verbal reports on program activities to SPAN Program Director;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the SPAN Program Director.


  • RN with Master’s degree in nursing or related health field.
  • Experience in public presentation, training and education, and substance use disorders required.
  • Software proficiency in Word and PowerPoint.
