Research Analyst

Job Description:
The Research Analyst helps inform the strategic direction of the organization and provides research support for bargaining, organizing, and other initiatives. Applicants should have at least three years of related research experience, in an area such as labor, advocacy campaigns, or healthcare policy.

The Research Analyst must be able to work within a team and communicate well. In particular, they must be able to write clearly, and tailor products to a variety of audiences.

The character of workdays can vary greatly. The Research Analyst should be comfortable with assignments from wrestling with data on a spreadsheet for consecutive days to briefing speakers at a rally to helping stage a picket line.

Desired background includes demonstrated leadership in strategic research, experience in bargaining, knowledge of the healthcare industry, and familiarity with the Los Angeles area union movement.

Working with the Research Coordinator, the Research Analyst is responsible for supporting the Union’s strategic plan, contract bargaining, organizing campaigns, and legislative advocacy.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Union’s Chief Negotiators to provide research and costing support for bargaining;
  • Track and report on hospital industry trends;
  • Analyze hospital budgets and financial reports;
  • Review health insurance plans;
  • Submit and track information requests and records;
  • Assist in background on state and local policy;
  • Work with the Union’s organizing staff on targeted campaign research and development;
  • Provide background for the organization’s strategic direction.

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to the labor movement;
  • At least three years of related research experience;
  • A BA or higher, preferably in economics, public policy, finance, or social science;
  • Strong technical and quantitative research skills;
  • Excellent writing facility;
  • Experience with Excel (e.g., pivots and lookup formulas), databases, and other research tools.

Typical Working Conditions:
The conditions and personal and physical demands that may be required to successfully perform essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • A commitment to sometimes work long and irregular hours and occasionally prepare for and attend events and Union activities on weekends, evenings and some holidays (e.g., Labor Day), or to complete assignments that cannot be completed in an 8-hour workday or during the week.
  • Ability to work independently, discern priorities, meet competing deadlines, and juggle a large workload in a sometimes fast-paced campaign environment.
  • Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
  • Regularly operate a computer, cell phone, and other general office equipment.
  • Stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Traverse in the office and occasionally in an outside environment. Traversing may include ascending/descending stairs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can elevate during events and campaign activities.
  • May include exposure to large crowds.

Compensation:
Salary range is between $55,000 - $60,000 and is commensurate with experience. Local 121RN provides a generous benefits package that includes fully-paid medical, dental and vision plans, paid holidays, vacation, and a defined benefit pension plan.
