Communications Director

UFCW Local 770 represents 30,000 members working in the retail food, retail pharmacy, meatpacking and food processing, laboratory, and cannabis industries. Local 770 represents workers in our core industrial jurisdiction throughout Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.

The Communications Director is responsible for developing and executing a communications strategy and overseeing the communications team in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving campaign environment. The Communications Director will work closely with the UFCW 770 leadership to develop and drive multiple ongoing communications strategies and campaigns. The Communications Director needs to be an independent thinker able to manage multiple campaigns and ensure that staff and campaigns are working together to achieve the long-term vision of the union.


  • Develop a broad communications strategy in line with the union’s mission, vision and priorities;
  • Build an external communications program that allows 770 to control the framing of our issues and an internal communications program that strengthens member engagement;
  • Manage a communications team, staff and consultants, ensuring a message consistent with our values across campaigns;
  • Manage production and approval of all communication materials such as press releases, brochures, newsletters, digital copy; digital content production (website, social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), including supervision of graphic development;
  • Oversee the recruitment and training of member spokespeople and maintain a list of members ready and able to speak on our issues;
  • Coordinate work of the Communication Department with other departments, staff and vendors;
  • Assist in supervision, execution and promotion of special events as needed;


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to message to varied audiences;
  • Demonstrated track record publishing Op-Eds, placing stories, and other kinds of earned media as well as social media;
  • Ability to create effective systems and work flows to execute campaigns communications and manage a team;
  • Understanding of communication needs of internal/external labor organizing campaigns strongly preferred;
  • Background in, or strong familiarity with the labor movement strongly preferred;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to meet changing project needs for multiple face-paced campaigns;
