LIUNA Local 483

Laborers' Local 483

Internal Organizer

Based in Portland, OR

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), Local 483, is looking for a full-time Internal Organizer. LIUNA Local 483 is a dynamic, member-driven labor union that represents approximately 1500 public employees, with bargaining units in the city of Portland and statewide. Our Local strives to use an organizing-focused model for internal work. Organizers are responsible for building the capacity and effectiveness of the Local. The organizer will identify, recruit, and help develop stewards and member leaders to represent their co-workers, enforce their collective bargaining agreements, and engage and organize in the community. A large component of the job is signing up new members and working with worksite leaders to conduct new employee orientations. Organizers will also work with stewards to represent the membership regarding worksite issues, disciplinary meetings, and grievances. The organizer will report to and be supervised by the Business Manager.
The successful candidate will have basic to advanced knowledge of organizing practice and principles; leadership and motivation skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and a keen interest in justice for working families. Knowledge of labor law and representation is preferred, but not required. Anyone joining our staff should be comfortable working in an organization where mutual respect, high performance, and critical thinking are expected. Candidates must be willing to work long hours, including evenings and weekends. We are committed to hiring staff who reflect our membership. Women, LGBTQ, people of color, and people with disabilities encouraged to apply.

While 1 to 5 years’ experience working with labor unions is strongly preferred, we will consider applicants with other types of organizing and advocacy experience.

LIUNA Local 483 offers a full salary and benefits package, including a defined benefit pension, mileage reimbursement, full medical and dental coverage for employees and their dependents, training and educational reimbursement, and opportunities for advancement.
