Field Director

Based in Rancho Cucamonga, CA


The Field Director manages approximately 21 Labor Relations Representatives (LRRs) and administrative staff in a geographic area that includes San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The Field Office represents more than 38,000 classified school employees.

The Field Director is responsible for prioritizing new member recruitment, collective bargaining, and representation activities. To do well in this position, the Field Director will be experienced in leading, organizing and mobilizing staff and volunteers through political action and advocacy, as well as have recent management experience in a fast-changing, dynamic environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to build an action-oriented, member-run union.

The California School Employees Association is a union that represents over 250,000 classified school employees who work in over 750 school districts and community colleges in California. CSEA is the largest independent classified school employee union in the AFL-CIO.

Examples of duties – Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Hire, train and direct activities of Labor Relations Representatives and administrative staff
  • Develop strategic plans with goals, metrics and timetables and get results
  • Allocate resources in campaigns to maximize political power for members using lists, charts and databases
  • Coordinate, identify and develop member leaders, chapter officers and stewards
  • Provide leadership to employee and rank-and-file negotiators and committees in collective bargaining
  • Supervise representation of members in formal hearings
  • Coordinate activities with other Field offices throughout the state
  • Advise and influence members, stewards, officials and staff

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications – A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.


  • 4 years’ experience organizing campaigns, representation, advocacy or collective bargaining necessary
  • 2 years’ experience managing others, projects and timelines
  • A valid driver's license, car and insurance are required.


  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science or related field
