Communication Specialist II

Position Summary:
Working within the Communications Department of SEIU Local 2015 is about successful and effective communication internally and externally. Internally, it is focused on clear, concise, and engaging message development and strategies that inform and mobilize members and staff in the core languages our members read and speak and through communication vehicles and platforms that are accessible to them. Externally, it is working to become a leading voice, advocate, and authority for quality long term care in the state of California and a catalyst for social justice in our communities – through the key pillars of our Justice Agenda. By doing so, we will have made the very landscape that we organize, bargain, and do political work on, easier terrain. This will raise standards for our members, their families and communities. In order to achieve this we must approach communications work with forward-thinking mindset on innovation, technology, creativity, and curiosity.

About the Organization:
Representing over 385,000 home care, skilled nursing facility, and assisted living center workers, SEIU Local 2015 is the largest Local in California. Our members represent every race, every faith, and every ethnicity but are united in their commitment to caring for California's most vulnerable; seniors and the disabled.

It is our mission to unleash the collective power of long term care workers, their families, and their communities; harness the power of technology; and, build a broad movement to disrupt the unjust status quo in order to bring lasting transformational change towards a more just society for all.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Writing and editing member communications, including copy for e-blasts, mass texts, flyers, social media direct mail, and website.
  • Working with communications and organizing staff to develop and execute communications strategies to build membership and advance campaigns.
  • Develop tactics to support our organizing, contract bargaining and legislative goals.
  • Assisting on event production and staging, scriptwriting, when needed
  • Working with media to frame member issues
  • Assisting in planning and implementing communications strategies to support campaigns by producing fact sheets, press kits, talking points, leaflets, flyers, op-eds and other materials as needed.
  • Assisting on other communications projects as needed, including training and developing member spokespeople and more.
  • Contributing to digital media strategies – from targeting, segmenting, and tactics.
  • Ability to conduct basic website content updates and basic graphic design as needed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Strong commitment to Immigrant Justice, Environmental Justice, Restorative Justice, Economic Justice, Worker Justice, Housing Justice and Disability Justice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to frame issues for different audiences
  • Must be able to plan, develop and handle multiple projects simultaneously, deliver on time and within budget
  • Proficiency Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher); familiarity with Canva, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign; basic understanding of communications and project management tools such as Slack, Trello, and Asana; ability to be trained as needed on additional software and train other staff as needed
  • Willingness to manage projects independently or work with a team
  • Have at least 2-4 years of experience in campaign communications, media relations, graphic design, web development, video or photo production, marketing, public relations, or writing or combination
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends; ability to travel as needed
  • At least 1 year experience in communication or campaign experience with a membership organization, labor union, grassroots advocacy, political campaign or elected official.
  • Proficient in two of the three major disciplines of Public Affairs work -- media relations, production management, and campaign communications and ready for training for proficiency on third.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. However, duties and function may require performing work in the field with members and outside constituents. Some irregular hours required. Intermittent travel may be required.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
Communication Specialist II may report to a Communications Director, Communications Manager, local union officer, or other assigned supervisor. Communication Specialists are frequently expected to operate without day-to-day supervision, to develop their own work plans and goals, and to act with a degree of discretion and independent judgment. Accordingly, they must be strong self-starters and have a commitment to fulfill the objectives of the organization.

Compensation and Benefits:
The current salary range is $61,042.27 - $90,240.92 based on experience and qualifications; set by a Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a full-time, salaried, over-time exempt position.
Full benefits package including employer-paid medical, dental, life and vision coverage for employees and their eligible dependents and a pension plan.
