Pension Benefits Manager

Based in Fairfax, VA


The Sheet Metal Workers’ National Pension Fund is a large defined benefit pension fund located in Fairfax, VA. We are seeking a Pension Benefits Manager who will be responsible for the oversight of the Pension Department.

The purpose of this role is to provide leadership in the Pension Department and to ensure accurate records are kept on all participants and benefits are calculated correctly and in accordance with the Plan Document and applicable law.

The Pension Benefits Manager will be responsible for ensuring that benefit applications are processed accurately and timely, making sure that monthly benefits payments are received, while ensuring that all aspects of the Plan Document and applicable laws are followed. Superior customer service skills and written and oral communication are required to communicate with local union leaders, participants, beneficiaries, employers, governmental agencies, senior management, and staff. The candidate is responsible for distribution of annual 1099s and filings with the IRS, and well as representing and advising in legal proceedings.

The Pension Benefits Manager will oversee the Pension Department and assign duties, set goals, monitor work for accuracy, and implement procedures and processes that instill accountability, quality, and performance measurements. The Manager will be responsible for all aspects of employee performance management and staff coverage.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree plus five years’ experience in a role administering a multi-employer, Taft-Hartley, defined benefit pension fund or 10 years’ experience in a similar role in lieu of a formal degree. Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience managing collectively bargained staff. In addition, problem solving, analytical skills, and multi-tasking while paying attention to special detail is essential. Proficiency in MS Office as well as pension fund administration systems is also required.
