  2. a current employee of the St. Louis Public Schools and AFT Local 420 member in good standing for 2 years prior may be granted a leave of absence to fill this vacancy;
  3. the Union does not pay the cost of any expense incurred in the interview process, or any expense incurred in relocation when employment requires a change in residency;
  4. Persons to be interviewed will be selected from the application letters with current resumes received through the resume software;
  5. interviews will be conducted in the Union office;
  6. employment will begin as per agreement for a period of one year between the successful applicant and the Union;
  7. salary and benefits based on experience and the contract between the Union and the successful applicant; Salary Range is $38, 500 – $43,000
  8. applicant must join OPEIU Local 13 (This is a union shop).

Job Qualifications and Main Functions

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ability to speak and present before large audiences
  2. Ability to persuade and motivate people
  3. Ability to work independently
  4. Experiences in teaching or other education/public employment related positions
  5. Experience in recruiting members
  6. Experience in negotiating union contracts
  7. Experience in processing and advocating contract grievances
  8. Experience in representing individuals and advocating their rights
  9. Knowledge of essential computer skills(word processing, spreadsheets, databases and communications software)
  10. Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
  11. Willing to accept direction and change from President or designee
  12. Must have a valid driver’s license and own transportation

MAIN FUNCTIONS
I. RECRUIT AND ORGANIZE NEW MEMBERS

  • Seek out and identify potential bargaining unit members
  • Follow-up leads to potential members
  • Speak before groups interested in Union information
  • Provide interested parties with Union literature, brochures, benefits, etc.
  • Design and initiate specific programs to build membership
  • Assist in the development of a Union membership recruitment program
  • Assist with regular membership communications
  • Meet on a regular basis with Union leaders (executive board members, chapter chairpersons, committee chairpersons, MC/IO coordinator, area coordinators and building stewards) to help plan activities
  • Train leaders to be effective in carrying out the Union’s program
  • Meet with groups to explain the functions of the Union, the state (AFT Missouri) and national (AFT) affiliates
  • Keep a daily log of activities

II. SERVICE SCHOOLS AND OFF-SITE LOCATIONS

  • Aid stewards in establishing negotiated committee (i.e. TEAC, Discipline, and Diversity Committees, etc.)
  • Aid stewards in handling grievances
  • Aid stewards to know and to execute their rights and responsibilities according to the St. Louis Public Schools Policy Statement
  • Encourage stewards and members to get involved in the Union’s, the state’s (AFT Missouri) and national’s (AFT) activities and programs
  • Advise and assist stewards and members on Hotline and Division of Family services (DFS) cases and the procedures to follow
  • Advise and assist executive board members, stewards, and members on legislative and political action programs of the Union’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) and AFT’s Legislative and Political Action Committee
  • Train Union leaders on essential leadership functions
  • Report on schools and off-site locations activities to the Communication Committee or PR person.

III. OTHER SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS

  • Work under the daily supervision and direction of the President or designee
  • Attend the Union’s meetings and workshops
  • Make bi-weekly written reports on activities, school and off-site location visitations and meetings to President and designee
  • Work on AFT assignments and attend trainings as requested
