Labor Organizer
Based in New York City, NY
Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) a national labor union, seeks to hire an Organizer on a contract basis.
Term: 12-month part-time contract with opportunity to extend
Job Description: The Organizer will elevate the existing organizing efforts of the Union and achieve recognition for a subset of Directors and Choreographers (Members and non-members) currently working in the commercial theatre arena.
Key Responsibilities:

Create a strategic organizing plan that will secure the collective bargaining position of a select working group.

Identify, coordinate, and execute independent labor organizing initiatives, both internally and externally, to further the strategic plan.

Work closely with and staff an established working committee of SDC Members working in this arena.

Communicate and strategize with the Executive Director, Director of Contract Affairs, seeking legal counsel as needed.

Participate in all campaign meetings, actions, and events.

Maintain accurate documentation of all organizing activities and report to the Executive Board as necessary.

Conduct basic organizing training with Executive Board members.
Job Requirements:

Minimum five years’ experience as an organizer along with additional extensive experience working with labor unions.

Proven success in leading organizing campaigns including representation elections.

Extensive knowledge of both federal and applicable state labor laws and the National Labor Relations Act.

Knowledge of labor relations and professional issues relating to the commercial theatre industry.

Demonstration of a firm commitment to social and economic justice.

Exceptional social, written, and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet).

Strong planning, time-management, and problem solving skills.
