Lead Field Organizer

Based in Chicago, IL


SEIU Local 73 seeks to hire one or more Lead Field Organizers, based out of the Chicago headquarters of the union, to grow and strengthen our union.

JOB SUMMARY
The Lead Field Organizer, under the leadership of a Director or equivalent supervisor, leads assigned teams to set goals, create plans and ensure accountability around internal worksite leader recruitment, internal membership and COPE recruitment, other union building and campaigns that achieve positive results for members and involve large numbers of members. Leads are expected to lead, train and coordinate the work of assigned staff, developing metrics to achieve goals. The successful applicant will be a working lead with their own assignments in addition to leading the work of others. Duties may include contract compliance and negotiating collective bargaining agreements. All staff are expected to integrate strategic campaign, politics and new organizing into their day-to-day work.

Key duties include working with Field Organizers to:

  • Understand and execute their role and meet goals
  • Develop work plans that set priorities for work
  • Develop necessary skills
  • Identify and develop organizing strategies, plans, campaigns and programs that will strengthen the union in the workplace
  • Identify, develop and activate rank and file leaders
  • Develop effective teams

Performs other duties as assigned and directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Leadership skills that engage and organize members and staff in carrying out a strategic plan and achieving goals
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to manage worksite leaders over a wide geographic area with multiple issues
  • Minimum five years of experience in advocacy and/or organizing work
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead a team of union staff
  • Substantial staff leadership experience
  • Significant knowledge of organizing principles and labor relations
  • Experience leading contract or similar campaigns and/or as a lead bargainer in contract negotiations
  • Current valid driver’s license, working automobile and valid auto insurance, cell phone.
  • Basic computer skills, with experience in organizing database systems required.
  • Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Local 73.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary for the position begins at $59,068 and includes a $550 per month car allowance, paid holidays and vacations, fully paid health benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer.
