Organizational Summary
The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization founded in 1996, as California reeled from the ugly aftermath of Proposition 187 and harsh federal copycats. The organization’s mission is to advocate for policies that uphold the humanity of immigrants and refugees while advancing racial, social and economic justice. A powerful hub for statewide advocacy, CIPC has worked hand-in-hand with community partners across the state for two decades to create a statewide and national blueprint to advance and protect immigrant-centered policies. CIPC also provides technical assistance, training and education on immigrant issues.

Position Summary
Strategic communications is a crucial component of CIPC’s approach to social change. We are deeply committed to developing and advancing a visionary narrative that embraces immigrants’ full humanity, honors the voices of people directly affected by unjust policies, and activates core values with mass appeal. CIPC’s communications work is campaign-oriented, collaborative, and well-integrated with organizing and policy efforts.

The Communications Specialist will strategically elevate the work of the organization and its regional partners, building the profile of key CIPC campaigns and inspiring target audiences to take action.

Our successful candidate will have a high degree of initiative, personal resilience, intellectual engagement and investment in immigrant rights issues.

The Communications Specialist reports to the Communications Director based in Oakland.

Some travel to our offices Loss Angeles office and other locations is necessary.


  • Support strategic communications efforts to advance key CIPC campaigns by creating and executing communications plans, including developing compelling materials, crafting talking points, preparing spokespeople, pitching stories and op-eds, and engaging with editorial boards;
  • Work with CIPC’s teams to identify strategic opportunities to elevate CIPC’s priority issues and staff as spokespeople for media, elevating the organization’s identity, personality and perspective;
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with key reporters, editors, and influencers in coverage areas relevant to CIPC’s mission;
  • Thoughtfully identify opportunities to build and improve on CIPC’s communications framework by closely examining communication needs and gaps, assessing possible solutions, and making concise recommendations to the Communications Director;
  • Drive CIPC’s social media campaigns and grow engagement on Twitter, Facebook, and other digital media platforms;
  • Support maintenance of CIPC’s website;
  • Monitor and analyze select news coverage; Track Web, Social media, analytics on e-blasts analytics to assess impact and opportunities for improvement and growth;
  • Manage design assets (images, photography, graphics, sound files, video uploads).


  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a communicator/ journalist is required;
  • Minimum 1-year experience in strategic communications for policy change and/or social justice organizations or elected offices;
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills, with the ability to produce clear and compelling written deliverables with short deadlines is required;
  • Creativity and sharp analytical thinking skills are required;
  • Competency in WordPress is strongly preferred;
  • Ability to read complex materials and synthesize the information quickly is required;
  • Ability to manage projects/priorities while working within scheduling requirements and respond to changes in a fast-paced environment is required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights is strongly preferred;
  • Knowledge of a language other than English is strongly preferred;
  • Self-initiated, motivated, well-organized;
  • Ability to travel frequently and on short notice is required.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience. CIPC provides a comprehensive benefits package to its employees, including paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions and parking access. We provide generous paid time off to staff including closing each year for a week long winter recess at the end of the calendar year.
