Job Description:
The CFL Field Organizer will work with the officers and staff of the CFL to expand union capacity for internal and external organizing across Chicago and Cook County through the development and convening of member activists and staff. The Field Organizer will help unions develop bottom-up organizing strategies for multi-partner campaigns. This person will also work with affiliates, union members, unorganized workers, community groups, and other stakeholders, as necessary. Additionally, the Field Organizer will help plan and coordinate public events, such as rallies and press conferences, to further advance the mission of the CFL.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the Chicago Presidents Organizing Initiative Table: A cross-sector table of local union leaders and staff to target, plan, and implement comprehensive campaigns to grow the size of Chicago’s labor movement
  • Convene issue campaign coalitions that increase density and raise standards in targeted economic sectors
  • Work with affiliate unions to develop internal and external worker organizing strategies, including committee building and leadership development
  • Expand union capacity for internal and external organizing through the development and training of member activists and staff
  • Provide day-to-day guidance to affiliate organizers and staff on the implementation of organizing plans
  • Coordinate coalition-building efforts with unions, worker centers, faith, youth, immigrant, environmental, neighborhood and other community organizations and leaders to support multi-union organizing efforts
  • Engage affiliate unions in multi-union organizing campaigns in targeted sectors or regions
  • Develop educational material and lead organizing training for labor activists and staff
  • Manage organizing databases, assessments, charts and other campaign tools, if needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Skill Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of organizing experience
  • Commitment to social change and to carrying out the vision and programming of the CFL
  • Experience with multi-partner organizing campaigns
  • Skilled at one-on-one communications, with house visits, worksite visits
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours when necessary
  • Experience working for or with labor unions or labor organizations preferred
  • Access to a vehicle made by members of UAW or Unifor
  • Occasional travel as required
  • Demonstrated writing skills required
  • Computer proficiency is required
