SEIU Local 32BJ

Program and Operations Assistant
Vamos4PR

Based in Washington, DC

Vamos4PR is seeking a Program and Operations Assistant to be based in Washington, DC.

SEIU 32BJ represents 175,000 property service workers in eleven East Coast states and the District of Columbia. We are an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2.1 million members dedicated to raising workplace standards, improving the lives of working families and our communities, and building a fair economy.

SEIU has 22,000 members in Puerto Rico, and thousands more members stateside with close family ties to the island. In 2016, SEIU passed a resolution that called for building a wider movement to win social and economic justice in Puerto Rico, in response to the increasing economic crisis on the island.

In 2016, 32BJ and SEIU, together with partners in community and labor, launched Vamos4PR, a network of stateside labor, community, cultural, and human rights groups committed to fighting for a better future for Puerto Rico and empowering the Puerto Rican diaspora.

Over the past four years, Vamos4PR has organized members of the Puerto Rican diaspora, including people displaced from the island by the debt crisis and by Hurricane Maria, to fight for debt relief and adequate resources for recovery and sustainable development, so the island and its people can thrive and determine their own future. The organization focuses on advocacy around economic justice, building public awareness of the issues facing Puerto Rico, and enhancing civic engagement among stateside Puerto Rican communities.

The Program and Operations Assistant will respond to and help the Executive Director drive and manage the program and operations of Vamos4PR, geared toward educating and mobilizing communities, activating voters, and winning changes that improve the lives of our members, the broader Puerto Rican community, and low and moderate income people.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Tracking program budget flows;
  • Coordinating and supporting activities to engage members in the work of Vamos4PR and Vamos4PR Action;
  • Working on program and operations compliance tasks, as needed, including tracking program staff time, and processing payments and reimbursements;
  • Monitoring field canvass activity;

  • Responsible for a broad variety of administrative tasks including but not limited to managing an extremely active calendar of appointments; completing expense reports; composing and preparing correspondence that is sometimes confidential; arranging complex and detailed travel plans, itineraries, and agendas; and compiling documents for travel-related meetings;
  • Providing leadership to build relationships crucial to the success of the organization, and managing a variety of special projects for the Executive Director;
  • Building and updating data sets for community outreach;
  • The Program and Operations Assistant may be assigned work outside the office.

Qualifications include:

  • 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, civic engagement, administrative work, and/or electoral campaigns;
  • Ability to plan their work and operate independently to keep work organized, prioritize work and manage deadlines without close supervision;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, being responsive to immediate needs while keeping scheduled work on track;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working relationships with various stakeholders;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including working with a diverse audience;
  • Familiarity with word and data processing software, and web-based communication tools;
