Communications Director

Based in San Francisco, CA


Starting Salary: $80,000 with benefits

The Communications Director is responsible for producing a 6-8 page tabloid newspaper distributed to 2,600 Local 38 members as well as to United Association officers and local unions throughout the United States and Canada, and maintaining the UA Local 38 Facebook page and website (www.ualocal38.org).

Duties:

  1. Sole staff position responsible for production of Pipelines, the official publication of UA Local 38, the Local 38 Trust Fund, and the Local 38 Training Department, Production includes story development, writing, editing, graphic design, photography, layout and pre-print production.
  2. Additional print projects including an annual wall calendar, a 48-page Camp Konocti (children’s camp) yearbook, and various print projects throughout the year. Working with department heads designing and formatting projects for printing (collective bargaining agreement, health and welfare booklets, cost item sheets, etc.)
  3. Special graphic and Public Relations projects such as signs, banners, advertising, organizing pamphlets, business cards, logo design, letterhead, etc.
  4. Designing and preparing camera ready artwork for various advertisements in programs, special histories, union publications, etc.

Requirements
Education and Experience:

  • BA in journalism or labor studies or equivalent experience in labor and community organizing with focus on communications, media and journalism or public relations.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of and experience in the labor movement, particularly in the Building and Construction Trades.
  • Knowledge of and experience in media production, with knowledge of graphic design software (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, OCR software and printing techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic forms of communications.
  • Ability to research and write readable materials of interest to pipe trades workers.
  • Extensive knowledge of photography, including large and small groups, worksites, projects, events, portrait and whatever else arises.

Travel and work hours:

  • Some travel and extended work hours may be required, including some Saturday and evening work.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
