Job Summary
SEIU 503, a union of 72,000 care providers and public services workers in Oregon, is seeking an Organization Equity & Inclusion Strategist.  A principal responsibility of the OE&I Strategist is to develop, implement, and support equity and inclusion programming across all sectors of our union to further our mission of becoming an anti-racist organization.  Working with the Organizational Development Director and Staff Development Strategist, the OE&I Strategist will provide vision, leadership, guidance, and training to 503’s staff in order to advance equity and inclusion as an integrated part of our work and a shared responsibility throughout our union. 

Job Duties
Organizational Culture

  • Be a leader in our collective work of building an organizational culture committed to racial justice, equity, effectiveness, honesty, respect, and accountability.
  • Work with the staff Organization Equity & Inclusion Committee and other stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate organizational structures and programs.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure that organizational and team practices align with organizational equity and inclusion goals.
  • Where appropriate, provide intervention, guidance, and support to teams, staff, and member leaders experiencing equity and inclusion challenges. 

Staff Onboarding & Continuous Development

  • Work with the Staff Development Strategist to design, deliver, and evaluate onboarding and continuous staff development programs that advance SEIU 503’s equity and inclusion goals. 
  • Assist the Organizational Development Director to integrate OE&I principles into SEIU 503’s recruitment processes.

Caucus Support

  • Coordinate and support SEIU 503 member-led caucuses and committees that are engaged in OE&I work; lead in the implementation of caucus and OE&I Committee plans.
  • Work with field teams to create strategies and develop skills to recruit and develop leaders that represent the diversity of our membership.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement weekly work plans and long term plans for our OE&I programs.
  • Report to Organizational Development Director on progress and obstacles in a timely manner.
  • Political action: door-to-door canvassing, phone banks, issue campaigns, candidate campaigns, informing the membership on the issues and candidates, targeting candidates, targeting precincts for candidate races, voter registration, questionnaires and surveys on candidates and issues; get-out-the-vote drives.
  • Perform other duties as required to support SEIU Local 503 and its mission.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a racial justice leader with demonstrated leadership in advancing equity and inclusion and implementing systemic change across multiple departments and teams in a labor union or similarly complex organization with a member governance structure.

  • Experience writing curricula, developing programs, and facilitating trainings and discussions for and among working people, using a variety of adult teaching techniques appropriate for action-oriented education. 
  • Knowledge and experience with theory and practices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and social justice work.
  • Bi-lingual ability to speak and write in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and committed to own growth and development.
  • Functions with a high level of integrity and transparency; comfortable giving and receiving direct feedback to/from members, peers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrated success working with staff and members of diverse backgrounds and identities; ability to develop positive relationships with people with different views and life experiences.
  • Ability to exercise strong judgment in highly complex situations.
  • Ability to take initiative, to work with a team, and to handle a fast-paced setting, multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; including active listening.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, database programs, and online research services.
