Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the assistant to the president for research and strategic initiatives and direct supervision of the manager of the Center for Economic Policy and State Legislative Strategies, the individual will assist with work to improve AFT’s support for affiliates on issues regarding the financing and quality of services provided by our members. They will work with assigned AFT affiliates to track policy developments and have responsibility to establish and expand contacts with relevant government and private organizations to obtain data and information; and develop contacts within organized labor. This is an entry-level, temporary position that expires on July 31, 2020.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with other AFT staff to conduct analysis and summarization of state legislative and administrative actions and proposals of concern to AFT constituencies.
  • Assist with the preparation of materials that advance the AFT’s mission at the state level.
  • Assist with analysis and summarization of state legislative and administrative actions and proposals of concern to AFT constituencies.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of tools for affiliate staff and appropriate leaders on state policy and related issues of concern to AFT.
  • Assist in the preparation of written articles or reports for publication by the AFT
  • Prepare presentations and communications to AFT affiliates, staff and allied organizations based on assigned research responsibilities.
  • Assist in developing training materials for any of the above responsibilities.
  • Serve as department representative at meetings and conferences. Assist in the planning of relevant meetings.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the assistant to the president or manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good communication skills including both written and oral communication.
  • Understanding of federalism, legislative processes, and organized labor.
  • Excellent organizational, quantitative and analytical skills, along with the ability to prioritize and manage a range of activities.
  • Provision of research support on time sensitive issues as they develop.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact and a professional demeanor.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing information related to legislative issues, privatization and public finance.
  • Experience and knowledge of public policy regarding education, public services, public finance, healthcare and labor relations.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and other statistical analysis tools to conduct analyses and prepare reports including the ability to create graphs of data in various formats.
  • Basic knowledge of the operations of the various institutions that employ AFT members.
  • Prior work experience in a union environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AFT and/or its affiliates is considered a plus.

Work Environment:
The work is generally performed in an office environment, but also requires a moderate amount of out-of-town travel. This position is located at the national headquarters office in Washington, DC.
