The Controller is responsible for the management and oversight of the financial and accounting functions of Working America, a 501(c)(5) labor organization, and the Working America Education Fund, its related 501(c)(3) public charity organization, and the administration of its financial and accounting controls, policies, and practices. The Controller also supports the Chief of Staff in providing strategic financial insight to the Executive Director.

Reports to: Chief of Staff

Description of Duties:

  • Oversee the day-to-day financial and accounting functions of the two organizations in accordance to established policies and procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP);
  • Assume primary responsibility for the supervision and management of Finance Department staff, including but not limited to the monitoring and evaluation of staff performance and hiring, promoting, demoting, and terminating staff;
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to ensure compliance with federal, state and local tax and regulatory agencies;
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing and posting of all Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, etc.;
  • Work with the Development and the Administration and Operations Departments to ensure timely bank deposits, and review deposits for accuracy;
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the General Ledger;
  • Prepare monthly bank statement reconciliations for review by the Chief of Staff;
  • Prepare monthly cost-sharing allocations between the two organizations for review by the Chief of Staff, and work with the Chief of Staff and Director of Administration to ensure proper training and compliance;
  • Prepare internal financial reports as directed by the Chief of Staff and provide analysis that informs financial decision-making;
  • Work with outside accounting firm to prepare for and oversee the annual audit of the two organizations and to facilitate the timely preparation, review, and filing of the 990s and other related tax documents; support the Chief of Staff in the preparation of periodic internal audits;
  • Review regular financial reports to various regulatory agencies (e.g. campaign finance bodies, lobbying disclosures, charitable registrations) and serve as backup on drafting when needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • 8+ years of finance and accounting experience required; Certified Public Accountant and/or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred;
  • 2-3 years of supervisory experience required; experience managing in an unionized work environment preferred;
  • Thorough familiarity with GAAP and IRS requirements for a non-profit organization required;
  • Strong analytical skills required;
  • Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise Edition and other financial software required;
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills required;
  • Experience with the financial management and compliance requirements for a 501(c)(4) with a related 501(c)(3) preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential financial data; ability to analyze financial database and offer strategic insights;
  • Highly detail oriented and organized;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management and external clients;
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines and work under pressure.

Starting Salary is $96,000. Includes medical insurance and 401(k) with employer contribution.
