External Organizer

Based in Bend and Portland, OR

Oregon Federation of Nurses and Healthcare Professionals (OFNHP) Local 5017 represents 5,500 nurses and healthcare professionals in Oregon and Washington, most of them employees of Kaiser Permanente, with a growing number from the PeaceHealth system. OFNHP is an affiliate of the Nurses and Health Professionals division of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Job Description:
This is a full-time position to work on external organizing campaigns. The positions primary assignment is in the Bend, OR area with occasional assignments to the Portland/Vancouver Metro Area. External Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, assessing workers, building lists, mapping worksites, identifying and developing worker-leaders and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. External organizers must also be able to perform work site and home visits.


  • Willing to work long and irregular hours.
  • Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license.
  • Have strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented.
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the OFNHP External Organizing Director
  • Conducts one-on-one organizing through meetings and home visits to accurately assess and recruit supporters and leaders.
  • Works with workers to develop a representative organizing committee, and trains and deploys them to move the campaign.
  • Writes turf plans to implement the overall organizing campaign and goals, while develops and implements strategies to counter anti-union campaigns.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of labor laws, especially with respect to union organizing.
  • Attend regular meetings with supervisors and teams to discuss progress and plan activities.
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis.
  • Take direction on activities to develop campaign and accomplish goals.
  • Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required.


  • Experience organizing in healthcare settings
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs (including word processing, spreadsheet and database software)
