WHO WE ARE: The Pennsylvania Joint Board of Worker’s United, SEIU, (PAJB), represents approximately 5000 workers employed by 40 employers spanning from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Our membership is diverse, and includes garment workers, food service workers, distribution center workers, and industrial laundry workers.

Workers United has a deeply rooted history representing garment workers. We are the former International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union, which was created in 1900 to fight sweatshops and bring decent working conditions. The ILGWU was one the first U.S. unions to have a primarily female membership.

Today we still hold the values close from over 100 years ago; every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. These are the same values share by our parent union, the Service Employee International Union, with over two million members in the United States and Canada and a leader in the fight for social justice.

LOCATION: Statewide through primary work is in Eastern PA, Lehigh Valley, and Northeastern PA

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Under the direction of the Organizing Director, helps lead External and Internal Organizing campaigns and assists in executing the strategic organizing plan for the PAJB, including NLRB election campaigns.
  2. Assists in the direction and development and training of volunteer member organizers and Organizing Committee members.
  3. Ensures the tracking, reporting and analysis on all campaigns in her/his purview.
  4. Works with allied organizations and communities in the fight for better conditions in the industries PAJB organizes and represents.
  5. Coordinates with other Union staff to carry out the organizing program.
  6. The job requires evening and weekend work and is not a “9 to 5” job.

Qualifications:

  • Two years or more of experience in labor union organizing campaigns
  • Knowledge of relevant special body of knowledge including labor law governing organizing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop varied communications strategy as part of organizing campaigns
  • Adept at leading and motivating workers in difficult struggles and dedication to workers' rights and social justice
  • Skilled at managing and meeting many and varying deadlines
  • Effective demonstrable oral, written and listening skills in English; Knowledge of Spanish is highly desirable
  • Excellent analytical and judgment skills as demonstrable by the ability to evaluate information and evidence and act strategically
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills showing flexibility as needed; adept at dealing with conflicting/changing priorities
  • Effective facilitating and organizing meeting skills
  • Experience organizing independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to do basic social media research necessary for member recruitment.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs including social media, Word, Excel, VAN and good planning and administrative skills

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good record. Leased car or car allowance will be provided
