The United Farm Workers is seeking a Farm Worker Liaison to be part of the Farm Worker Movement.

ABOUT UFW: Begun in 1962 by Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Gilbert Padilla and other early organizers, the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) is the nation’s first enduring and largest farm workers union. The UFW continues organizing in major agricultural sectors, chiefly in California. Recent years have witnessed dozens of UFW union contract victories protecting thousands of farm workers, among them agreements with the some of the largest berry, winery, tomato, dairy and mushroom companies in California and the nation. More than 75 percent of California’s fresh mushroom industry is now under union contract. Many recent UFW-sponsored laws and regulations protect all farm workers in California, especially those at non-union ranches. They include the first state standards in the U.S. to prevent further deaths and illnesses from extreme heat and in 2016 the first law in the country providing farm workers in California with overtime pay after eight hours a day. The UFW continues to actively champion legislative and regulatory reforms for farm workers covering issues such as worker protections, pesticides and immigration reform.

SUMMARY:
The UFW is seeking a motivated advocacy liaison to serve as a connection between the farmworker community and the varied agricultural stakeholders in Washington.

Part community organizer, part political advocate, this position serves as a nonpartisan liaison between agricultural workers in eastern Washington and elected officials and regulatory bodies in Olympia. This role will involve driving between widely spaced rural agricultural communities.

The ideal candidate will help develop and organize member engagement programs to support UFW projects and campaigns. The position will include identifying local leaders within the farmworker community, volunteer recruitment, mobilization efforts, education drives and other related activities.

The Liaison will meet and engage with elected officials and policy decision makers to promote labor justice and hold employers accountable for agricultural working conditions. This work will include the opportunity to work directly with legislators seeking to make the lives of farmworkers safer and more just.

The Liaison will also use digital tools to organize and coordinate with the digital and earned media communications operations. Reports to the National Vice President.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This is not an exhaustive list.)

  • Organizes and empowers farmworkers to improve worksite safety, working conditions and fair treatment at work and identifies farmworker leaders for advocacy.
  • Helps develop and implement programs for farmworker community engagement.
  • Maintains collaborative working relationships with legal services, immigration justice, and related agencies including municipal, county and state organizations.
  • Maintains partnerships and key relationships with religious, student, political, labor, business, and community organizations and local leaders.
  • Collaborates with Communications staff to collect worker narratives and help deliver them to legislators, consumers and media (e.g. press conferences)
  • Manages and implements a variety of education and mobilization activities to empower workers, including outreach, house visits, building and leading coalitions and direct community contact in targeted communities.
  • Helps organize conferences, campaign events and actions including logistics and worker turnout
  • Uses social media as an organizing tool- including online/digital campaigns and building digital community e.g. livestreamed meetings, social media, email lists etc.
  • Travels to various areas throughout the region (and potentially internationally) to liaise with stakeholders and policy decision makers.
  • Complies with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May involve the coordination and supervision of volunteers/interns and worker leaders.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will lead efforts as assigned by the National Vice President.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS
    Strong fluency in English and Spanish absolutely required. This role will require you to communicate directly with Spanish speaking workers as well as local and state elected officials. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to speak Mixteco, Zapotec, Triqui or other languages indigenous to Mexico a plus.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, and area. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Labor organizing background preferred. Minimum of 1 year experience as a labor or community organizer.
  • Personal or generational experience with farm work a strong plus.
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual abuse, forced labor or trafficking is a strong plus.

ADDITIONAL AND/OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to the mission of the farm worker movement is required, personal or indirect lived experience with agricultural work is ideal.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, or ability to learn quickly, will be required.
  • Familiarity with the agricultural industry in Washington State, and Columbia Valley/Yakima Valley in particular is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the dairy industry and supply chain is a plus.
  • Must be familiar with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Able to use Google suite of products.
  • Familiarity with messaging tools such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
  • Basic social media and internet literacy.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in applicable field (political science, labor relations, public policy etc.) a plus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Driver license and automobile insurance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to drive long distances between rural communities within the state of Washington (mileage will be compensated).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position will include long and/or irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION:
Salary $47,000-51,000 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits included.
