SEIU 121RN is currently seeking a Lead External Organizer to organize Registered Nurses and Healthcare Professionals around Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Ventura Counties. SEIU 121RN represents over 8,500nearly 9.000 nurses and healthcare professionals in Southern California. We have been on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building power for healthcare workers, and leading the way in healthcare reform.

SEIU 121RN has a Lead External Organizer position available immediately, based in Greater Los Angeles.

SOME KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to manage the work of up to 5 staff organizers.
  • Ability to build a team, to communicate clearly and persuasively verbally and in writing.
  • Building one-on-one relationships with workers and staff.
  • Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union workers.
  • Identifying, recruiting and developing worker leaders.
  • Conducting individual and group meetings with workers.
  • Engaging, motivating and mobilizing workers to take action.
  • Planning and executing actions and events to support worker organizing efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2+ year experience organizing and leading staff – preferably in the healthcare sector.
  • A lead organizer should have run and won a campaign from beginning to end.
  • Proven ability to discern priorities, meet competing deadlines, and juggle a large workload in a fast-paced campaign environment.
  • A strong interest in the labor movement, and/or the healthcare industry.
  • Strong ability to connect and build professional relationships with highly educated nurses and professionals of varying backgrounds in pursuit of a common goal.
  • Ability to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from department leadership.
  • An independent and critical thinker with the ability to learn and understand complex issues quickly.
  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel throughout Southern California frequently and for long periods of time.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurance.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin or Tagalog and English is a plus.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some of these are:

  • Regularly operate a computer, cell phone, and other general office equipment.
  • Stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Traverse in the office and in an outside environment during various types of events. This may include moving, or being stationary, for multiple hours, in outside conditions. Traversing may include ascending/descending stairs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • The role will require a commitment to often work long and irregular hours to prepare for and attend events and Union activities on weekends, evenings and some holidays (e.g., Labor Day), or to complete assignments that cannot be completed in a regular workday or during the week.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can elevate during events and campaign activities.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • May include exposure to large crowds.

  • Salary for this position is commensurate with the amount of experience.
