SEIU 32BJ is one of the largest and most dynamic labor unions in the United States, with 175,000 members in 11 states and Washington, DC. The Union is at the forefront of driving a progressive policy agenda, including living and prevailing wage laws, responsible procurement and development standards, and access to health care and quality education. In the Airports division, we represent over 15,000 members. With 10,000 of those members in the NY/NJ airports.

We are seeking a bilingual Field Representative to help build power for property service members in the NY/NJ Airports division. This is not an office job. 32BJ members work at the airports in shifts that span all 24 hours of the day. Field Reps spend the majority of their time in the field, at the airports, working with 32BJ members. They check-in and update supervisors and other team members regularly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying worksite leaders;
  • Bringing leaders together as committees to address worksite issues through our Labor Management Process;
  • Developing worksite leaders’ skills to represent, organize and mobilize their coworkers;
  • Mobilizing leaders and their coworkers to advocate for good working conditions at the airports in NY and NJ.

Scope and nature of work

  • Airports Field Representatives are organizers. To that end, they must be able to engage with workers, develop a plan to bring people together around shared goals, and inspire them to take action.
  • Field Reps find ways to develop members, deepening their involvement, by finding new ways for them to engage in union work. They provide the direction and support those members need to be successful.
  • Field Reps works with program directors and supervisors to develop their workplans. They must be able to organize their own time effectively, and to carry out workplans with minimal supervision.
  • Field Reps adjust their work schedules as needed, in the interest of a current campaign or action. They may be required to work long and irregular hours.
  • Field Reps are expected to lead by example. They model conduct for the members they seek to develop into leaders.


  • Ability to cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to identify workers with the potential to lead;
  • Ability to lead and motivate those leaders to communicate goals and inspire members to take action;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining and contract administration issues OR a willingness and ability to learn;
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage and prioritize work, subject to deadlines in a dynamic environment, both individually and as a team member;
  • Must be competent in administrative skills and be able to use basic computer applications (MS Word, Internet/email functions) as well as tracking and database tools;
  • Bilingual skill: Spanish/English, French/English, Haitian Creole/English or Twi/English.
