Women’s Initiative Committee Temporary Organizer

Based in Houston, TX

The Service Employees International Union Texas (SEIU- TX) is an organization united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide and dedicate to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society. Becoming a Women’s Initiative Committee Organizer is an opportunity to design a cutting edge program for women across economic lines to join together and advocate for issues like protection at the workplace, and affordable childcare and healthcare. This job is based in Houston, Texas with some in-state traveling required.


  • Implement and execute a campaign to build long-term power for women across economic lines.
  • Develop a statewide women’s initiative that brings together working women for a summit in the spring of 2020.
  • ID, recruit and train members and community leaders to advocate and build strong networks in their worksites and communities that they can build power and move to take strategic action.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations across the state to support janitors, healthcare workers, security officers, and airport workers.
  • Coordinate community involvement in janitors and healthcare workers contract campaigns
  • Represent SEIU Texas women’s initiative summit at conferences, public meetings, and media events, as needed.
  • Coordinate special projects, assignments, activities, and other duties as assigned.


  • Strong social, written, and verbal communication skills, patient in pressure situations
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to learn and troubleshoot without heavy supervision
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and empowering working people to build political power
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, occasional travel
  • Driver’s license and reliable car
  • Basic computer skills in Word & Google documents required, experience with PDI voter software preferred
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus
  • Experience working in organizing and/or political programs
  • Experience organizing community events
  • Volunteer experience in the community, political experience in his/her community or other experience that demonstrates a commitment to improving the lives of working people.
  • Comfortable speaking publicly
  • Ability to effectively train and recruit members and community leaders to participate in women’s initiative events
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and work well under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with community, policy, labor, and government stakeholders; existing relationships in Texas politics and social justice organizations a plus.
  • Organized and detail-oriented. Takes initiative, is creative and resourceful.

This is a temporary position ending in Summer of 2020. Salary is competitive and negotiable based on experience. Full benefits package including great health insurance, pension plan, car allowance, and paid vacation.
