Under general supervision, performs a variety of administrative, clerical, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Research & Education.

To include, but are not limited to those listed below. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Open mail daily and distribute to appropriate personnel for handling. Review and process incoming and outgoing correspondence, including electronic mail, and communications.
  • Compose various letters, correspondence and/or other material. Make copies, scan and file correspondence with related backup material.
  • Answer incoming calls and inquiries, provide assistance when possible, or refer to the appropriate individual.
  • Type article for APWU tabloid, convention books, or local and state publications.
  • Process forms for educational materials requested by national, state, and local union officials for seminars, conferences, and educational programs.
  • Maintain an up-to-date mailing list for the Research and Education Department.
  • Prepare workbooks, stuff kits, type badges and certificates for seminar, conferences, and conventions.
  • Maintain files, including establishing new files and purging closed files.
  • Type, organize, and maintain educational CDs, audio/visual programs, workbooks, and instructors’ guides.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two years secretarial or equivalent experience.


  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, staff, employees and members of outside agency officials.
  • Ability to type 45 wpm.
  • Ability to utilize a computer, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook. Willingness to learn additional software programs, including but not limited to Adobe Acrobat and Paperport.
  • Knowledge of how to build and create CDs (including bookmarking and linking)
  • Ability to use office equipment such as copiers, scanners, fax, desktop computer system and peripherals, etc.
  • Ability to perform duties with neatness and accuracy.
  • Individual must be dependable with exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Must demonstrate excellent telephone courtesy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with APWU personnel, members and general public.
