Grievance Representative

Based in Philadelphia, PA


With 175,000 members SEIU 32BJ is the largest union representing property service workers in the country. The Union is at the forefront of moving a progressive policy agenda, including living and prevailing wage laws, responsible development standards, green jobs and access to health care. Its parent organization, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), represents nearly 2 million members nationwide.

SEIU 32BJ represents over 20,000 members in Eastern Pennsylvania. We are currently seeking a talented, experienced Grievance Representative (GR) to work in our Philadelphia office.

The GR must be a persuasive advocate for the Union and its members, possess refined problem-solving skills, have the ability to mediate workplace disputes, and possess strong negotiation skills. S/He must be able to manage her/his caseload and process grievances within contractually fixed time limits.

Responsibilities include:

  • Having a full understanding of and commitment to the Union’s contracts and taking an active role, along with officers, in the implementation of those contracts;
  • Investigating potential contract violations and grievances in compliance with all contractual timelines and duty of fair representation requirements;
  • Processing grievances efficiently and effectively by completing a thorough and timely investigation and presenting a thoughtful, compelling and forceful arguments to management;
  • Analyzing employee relations problems and recommend solutions to workers, leaders and Labor Relations officials;
  • Recommending to union leadership which cases should proceed to arbitration and develop and present the Union’s case in arbitration and/or mediation hearings;
  • Maintaining accurate records of member and employer contact;
  • Working with Field Representatives (internal organizers) to develop and implement shop steward training programs;
  • Mentoring and training union shop stewards in resolving workplace problems;
  • Working with Field Representatives and union leadership to recognize grievance patterns and develop a strategy for response;
  • Supporting union contract, organizing and political campaigns as may be required from time to time.

Additional qualifications include:

  • A clear commitment to social justice, and an interest in representing workers from diverse backgrounds; strong written and oral skills are required;
  • Strong listening and communication skills in order to work with diverse members who are presenting workplace issues;
  • Strong writing skills are required, as the GR is responsible for drafting grievance claims and correspondence;
  • Basic computer literacy including knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and the ability to learn new applications;
  • Experience arguing grievances; ability to lead the presentation of arguments in arbitration;
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Polish/English is a plus but not required;
  • Must have access to a car and state required driver’s insurance for regional travel.

GRs normally work regular business hours, but must have the flexibility to work evening and weekend hours if necessary.
