Organizing Director

The South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council represents over 100 unions in Silicon Valley. The Labor Council’s primary goal is to advance candidates, causes and policies that benefit working families. We achieve this objective with a combination of activities, including community organizing, leadership training, electioneering and issues advocacy.

Position Summary:
The South Bay Labor Council seeks an enthusiastic, hard-working, experienced organizer to help lead our advocacy work. The ideal candidate will have experience with direct organizing, civic engagement and media relations and a demonstrated commitment to social justice. The Organizing Director will need to be a confident leader and an on-the-ground organizer with the ability to run ground-breaking organizing campaigns in collaboration with community partners and team members. The Organizing Director will report to the Executive Officer of the Labor Council.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts to engage the Labor Council’s union affiliates and their members, including organizing, trainings, forums and other events
  • Lead community engagement efforts, including community meetings, public events, demonstrations and other forms of civic engagement
  • Lead local policy campaigns on issues such as housing, labor standards, immigration and government reform
  • Lobby local officials on these and other issues
  • Conduct media relations and social media activity in connection with policy and organizing work
  • Support the Labor Council’s political campaigns, including recruiting volunteers, supervising campaign staff, running phone and text banks and organizing precinct walks
  • Support the internal and external organizing campaigns of member unions
  • Develop long and short term campaign plans with support and input from supervisor
  • Develop organizing materials including talking points, flyers and fact sheets
  • Perform other duties as required to support the work of the organization

Required Qualifications:

  • Deep commitment to social and economic justice
  • Substantial community and/or union organizing experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience handling media and social media
  • Strong work ethic and personal commitment to excellence
  • Willingness to learn, be flexible and work well with others
  • Multitasking and attention to details while managing and meeting timelines
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure
  • Respect for people from all walks of life
  • Technological proficiency with common computer applications, social media platforms and the internet
  • Bilingual Spanish or Vietnamese strongly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle

Salary Range: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year. Full benefits package includes health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan, paid vacations and holidays and sick leave.
