Director of Political Outreach and Engagement

Based in the CWA Headquarters in Washington, DC


The Political Department at the Communications Workers of America (CWA) has been expanding the capacities of its political program including member leadership development, PAC fundraising, volunteer recruitment, member-to-member engagement, building alliances with progressive movement organizations, and IE capacity. We are looking for someone to develop and lead a long-term strategic plan to:

  1. Increase volunteer member engagement in our political program and political fundraising operations;
  2. Build political strength in targeted regions of the country that will have significant national political impact in years to come;
  3. Deepen relationships and coordination with electoral and allied social movement organizations at the national, state and local levels;
  4. Identify critical electoral targets in each election cycle and build CWA capacity to impact results.

This person will work closely with the Director of Legislation and Politics to build and implement strategic plans that incorporate our staff, Locals and rank-and-file political organizers. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone who wants to help further build one of the most progressive and deepest rank-and-file member led programs in the Labor Movement.

Characteristics of the Successful Candidate

  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment and manage workflow across departments: You must be able to prioritize and switch gears quickly between the multiple projects. You must successfully plan and coordinate workflow across teams, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Compelling public speaker: You have a track record of compellingly representing organizations in multiple forums, including delivering political remarks, speaking with the media, and presenting on public panels.
  • Familiarity with and connections across the progressive and social justice movements: You have a strong set of relationships within the progressive movement, ideally including both national and state-based policy, advocacy and grassroots organizing groups and networks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage relationships with national political organizations, progressive electoral partners, federal candidate campaigns, and allied social movement organizations
  • Create plans with District Legislative and Political Coordinators and Field Director to build strategic electoral alliances
  • Oversee national electoral program, including coordinated and IE programs of field, mail and coalition work
  • Develop national strategy for federal races, included House, Senate, and Presidential; and statewide races (i.e. Gubernatorial, Attorney General)
  • Develop political plans to leverage elections in support of organizing and bargaining campaigns
  • Support national and district field directors in developing state campaigns
  • Support member leadership development programs, including but not limited to electoral boot camps
  • Develop a national PAC fundraising program, expanding year to year
  • Develop a national annual contribution budget and manage PAC contributions
  • Work with Districts to strategically disburse contributions
  • Develop and manage campaign budgets through internal process, including writing proposals and evaluations
  • Manage budgets for coordinated field and IE programs, including metrics, compliance, and reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

  • At least a bachelor's degree in relevant field or equivalent relevant experience
  • Have at least 7 years of demonstrated campaign experience in worker organizing, political campaigns and/or movement building
  • Have demonstrated commitment to social, economic and racial justice and the labor movement
  • Proven record of raising funds for member based PAC (COPE)
  • Experience developing political and campaign budgets
  • Have advanced communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours and travel away from home/office
  • Past experience supervising staff
