Higher Education Union and Community Organizer

SEIU Local 200United is hiring a Union and Community Organizer – a strategic, high-energy individual with a demonstrated ability to mobilize higher education workers and community members to fight for fair wages and benefits, and equity for everyone on campus.

For 100 years, working people in SEIU have been standing up for our rights and fighting for dignity, respect, and better conditions in our workplaces and communities. SEIU Local 200United is a Local chapter of SEIU that is made up of a wide variety of workers (15,000) in public, private, and federal sectors in Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

Responsibilities:

  • Hold 1-1’s with workers, union member leaders and community leaders (faith, labor, elected, etc.) to grow our presence and deepen relations in our communities.
  • Meet with community stakeholders and move them to support the campaign
  • Attend community and political functions as a representative of the union
  • Identify and recruit workers, community members and leaders and move them to support the campaign
  • Train worker leaders to identify and recruit new activists and develop committees to move the mission.
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a daily basis.
  • Support and empower workers to build power to positively impact their working conditions as well as larger social/political issues

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and lead people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Direct experience in field organizing for issue campaigns.
  • Commitment to the goals and principles of union organizing, workers’ rights, direct action, economic justice, and other progressive issues.
  • Strong speaking and writing skills a must.
  • Ability to use Word and Excel required. Experience using VAN, Salesforce, or other CRM’s is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Car and valid driver’s license and insurance required.
  • Willingness to work long hours, evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established benchmarks and deadlines. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve independently while working as part of a team.

Location:
SEIU 200united has offices across New York State. Position requires some on-site work throughout New York State and Vermont.

Compensation:
This is a one-year, salaried position. Full benefits package including: 100% employer-paid family health, dental, and life insurance, a defined benefit pension, and a car allowance.
