DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the AFT 6157 Union President and Executive Board to provide union leadership in the course of advancing the interests of bargaining unit members of the San José/Evergreen Federation of Teachers AFT 6157. The Union represents over 725 full-time and adjunct faculty on 2 college campuses with one collective bargaining agreement. The union has deep roots in the community, and the faculty we represent are as diverse as the community we serve. The Union has developed a strong leadership relationship and is part of the decision making process within the District. We are a premier local in California and have received numerous political and social activism awards. LEADERSHIP QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS:
AFT 6157 seeks an exceptional and experienced individual who will embrace the Union's efforts in maintaining and continuing to build a strong and collaborative union. The Executive Director will assist with, implementing, and advancing the membership and goals of the union organization while exhibiting commitment to social justice values. The position is currently open.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. Participate in negotiating collective bargaining contracts using traditional and nontraditional formats; ability to analyze and evaluate the District’s budget in support of negotiations.
  2. Work creatively to solve issues before they become grievances.
  3. Provide vision and leadership to prepare the AFT 6157 to thrive in a post-Janus world.
  4. Work with community groups, other unions, CFT/AFT and politicians in mutual efforts benefitting our members and our community.
  5. Organize activities to grow and strengthen the membership including responding to the needs of a changing membership.
  6. Work in collaboration with Union Board to develop strategic planning sessions.
  7. Serve as the Union representative to district, college and community committees.

Exemplary Leader and Organizer

  • A proven leader and organizer with tenacity who supports, respects, empowers, and encourages the contributions of all faculty, Executive Board members, and district full-time and adjunct faculty;
  • A strong leader who has the ability to oversee and manager the union office and the half-time Office Manager and provide leadership and guidance to the Executive Board.

Strong Communicator

  • An effective communicator and team leader who listens openly and carefully, who is inclusive and approachable, who demonstrates flexibility and creativity in problem solving and who has the ability to build consensus;
  • A dedicated writer and communicator with strong writing skills to produce newsletters, negotiations news and other communications with the membership and community;

Innovative

  • A creative thinker with skills in both collective bargaining and solving issues without having to go to grievance/arbitration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in Union related work.
  • Experience in the collective bargaining and negotiations process.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional work experience in a California Community College.
  • Demonstrate effective analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic backgrounds of community college employees and students.
  • Possession of a Masters degree.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and education. Benefits are fully paid by the AFT 6157 and include: medical, dental, vision, LTD, Life Insurance and an IRA-SEP retirement plan with vacation, sick leave and holiday time off.
