Strategic Researcher

The New York State Nurses Association is a labor organization of over 40,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. We are New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

The Strategic Researcher reports to the Director of Strategic Research and is responsible for to help design and execute bargaining and organizing campaigns by conducting research and analysis which can be applied to contract negotiations, new organizing and other strategic goals of the union.


  • Industry analysis and reporting on emerging reimbursement trends and hospital finances using: audited consolidated financial reports, Federal quality and NYS DOH cost reports, 990s, and ERISA reports.
  • Evaluate RN workforce and labor relations developments through news media, industry journals and studies.
  • Network and develop partnerships with multiple stakeholders, such as: university academics, government agencies (i.e. Department of Health, Attorney General’s office) and non-profit agencies, central labor councils and research firms.
  • Critically analyze and write summary reports on single hospitals, hospital systems, and/or state/nation- wide comparison analysis.
  • Profile employer Corporate and Executive leaders and Boards of Directors.
  • Analyze Federal, state and municipal bonds, acquisitions, mergers, bankruptcies and new construction of facilities.
  • Assist in the development of strategies and help implement internal and external organizing campaigns
  • Produce research materials for staff and members to use in member education and negotiations, as well as for the use of Communications and Governmental Affairs Departments.
  • Develop contacts throughout the state, the region and nationally to advance research goals.
  • Work in collaboration with all NYSNA programs and activities as needed to achieve overall organizational goals.


  • Research experience and excellent writing, analytical, computer and data skills required.
  • Advanced education and/or equivalent work experience in labor research and analysis of health care industry, financing and/or economic development is required.
  • Union research, organizing and labor relations experience preferred.
  • Ability to work with a team, take initiative and handle multiple projects under deadline. Experience in and knowledge of the health care profession, and in particular the nursing profession, is desirable.
